Hello all #agathachristieclub readers and all who love Christie!

Has anyone listened to this month's Christie read? I'm reading the paperback this month and enjoying it, but so far Roger Ackroyd is my favourite this year.

What do you all think?

batsy Haven't started this month's read yet but do agree that Roger Ackroyd is the highlight so far this year :) 6y
Sarah83 I don't find a German copy and I don't want to read it in English, so I wouldn't be able to read this one. 😫 6y
RachelAmphlett I‘m thinking I need to go back and read Roger Ackroyd as I didn‘t enjoy it as much as I expected to. And Then There Were None is still a firm favourite! 6y

Sarah83 Thank you 😍 6y
alisiakae I‘m a little behind, and currently reading The Big Four (probably my least favorite of the year, boy is it dragging!). Roger Ackroyd has definitely been the highlight since Jan. 6y
ferskner I'm listening to it now too. I like it more than her other espionage thrillers, simply because I love all the Bright Young Things, but I'm really ready for her to move on from this style. I read that she considered these really easy to write, so it makes sense that she turned to them in the aftermath of her mother's death, her divorce, and her ten missing days. 6y
PurpleyPumpkin The Murder of Roger Ackroyd has definitely been my favourite so far. This one is next up (I think I‘m a month behind). 6y

Pickpick

I really enjoyed this story of an awkward, painfully honest man who happened to commit a very meaningless and pointless murder. You can't help but dislike the MC but I liked the simplicity of the sentences which is probably down to the translation too. This edition has some crazy weird illustrations too that added to the discomfort of Camus story.

Mehso-so

After a strong start this came somewhere between a pan and so-so for me. In this book Frankenstein becomes both monster and creator combined and I am interested to read what others make of the ending. I could see where the author was trying to go but I don't feel the book hung together well with it's great start, long drawn out middle and rushed ending. Overall, interesting in parts but there were too many plot holes for me.

Men Explain Things to Me | Rebecca Solnit
post image
Mehso-so

This has me a little frustrated. Solnit's strongest essays are those giving a literary critique of Woolf and Sontag. I feel her work is clearer when she has something concrete to base her ideas on. Some essays skimmed issues & felt superficial to me, I wanted her to go deeper and make further comment rather than just mentioning injustices that had made the news. Solnit seemed very distant in these essays & I have finished it with mixed feelings.

Prairiegirl_reading I'm 83% through and couldn't agree more except to say that I wasn't even sure how the Woolf/Sontag essay even fit with the rest. 6y
Bambolina_81 @Prairiegirl_reading I don't think it fits at all, I think that's why I like it! It makes me want to re-read Sontag again :) 6y

post image

I knew nothing about Roxane Gay before starting this yesterday but having just heard her section on Caitlin Moran's brand of feminism...I think I'm her new number one fan. I've struggled to find books about feminism that don't resort to lame humour or superficial lists of statistics. So far I'm really enjoying this. It's a shame this isn't narrated by Gay as I'd love to hear her tell it.

Cathythoughts I have resistance to reading this book .... but your review is very encouraging 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 6y
Bambolina_81 @Cathythoughts I was surprised. I think I'm in the minority of finding modern feminist texts unsatisfactory, no one seems to be really saying anything or they resort to crassness. I enjoyed this one because it is one woman's thoughts and experiences on a range of issues. You don't have to agree with her and I like that. It would be great to hear your thoughts if you do read it. 6y

#agathachristieclub

This is my favourite on our chronological journey, so far! I enjoyed the 'twist' and the reveal seemed much darker than the previous books. Perhaps I enjoyed it as Hastings wasn't the narrator? I guessed the murderer this time about three chapters from the end but only because everyone else had been discounted 😂

I'd also recommend this narration by Hugh Fraser. His voice is very well suited!

Jerdencon I found the ending really good and didn't guess the murderer at all until the very end but found I was skimming over parts at times in the middle. 6y
Bambolina_81 @Jerdencon I love how Christie ends her books after the reveals. All the preamble is done, murderer identified. Done. I love her style. 6y

Book one toward my #Litsyclassics challenge is complete 😊

For a slender book I found this one took a while to get through because of Behn's writing style. It's the story of slavery, betrayal and love and has such a terribly sad ending. I've read some reviews that consider Behn to have suspect views on race and slavery but this was written in 17th century so I would expect her perspective to reflect that. Perhaps I'm in the minority?
