@TheNeverendingTBR and I lost our pug Dennis yesterday.

He‘d been with me 11 years, through 4 house moves and 4 babies, loving each one kindly and gently from afar, just watching.

He was a good dog, and will leave a really big hole in our family.

Rip my old friend, run free over the rainbow bridge 🌈🖤

We‘ve had an awful week where our daughter has had a viral bug and didn‘t eat or drink for nearly 4 days, we‘ve bought nearly half the bakery, takeaways, chocolate, fruit, all kinds in efforts to get her to eat and drink *anything*

The doc who examined her took one look in her mouth and told her she needed to try or she‘d end up on a drip from dehydration 🥴

Hopefully over the worst now though, she perked up yesterday.

What a week 🥸

This is the second book I‘ve read by this author and both times I‘ve been left touched.

He has gone above and beyond, risking his job and reputation to take on patients who are essentially dead or dying and bring them back from the brink.

Of course he has had patients die, the one that touched me the most was the young African child and mother, which was a terribly sad outcome and you can tell this surgeon carries these cases with him daily.

Haunting, terrifying, and a horrible insight into the unravelling of a mind, falling into insanity.

The hotel is creepy, filled with horrors around every corner, I felt so sorry for Danny and everything he had to face and overcome.

Jacks battle with the hotel was raw, hard to read, and as one of his final acts to tell his son how much he loved him - you knew the hotel did not win.

Another enjoyable novel from SK.

bthegood One of my favorites - People often say the book is better than the movie - very true here - the movie almost feels like a separate entity (character of Jack and ending in the movie so different from the book) - but it is an enjoyable movie if you don't go in with the expectation that it will be like the book 🙂 I have found that I am usually disappointed with the movie interpretation of Kings books (even when he has had a hand in making them) - (edited) 2y
LostInSpace @bthegood I haven‘t seen the movie yet but of course I have seen the scenes of Jack going crazy (bathroom scene, scene on the stairs) in my mind the two just don‘t seem to match up. The Jack in the story seemed nuts yes but much calmer, less unhinged then that. I don‘t know, from what I know of the film I‘m not sure I‘d enjoy it if I thought of it as the books, as you say separate entity 🤣 2y
LostInSpace @bthegood though I did enjoy the original pet sematary movie - I haven‘t seen the most recent one yet 2y

This was a wild book, aliens, plagues, some casual sexism (why not 🙄)

This book shows it‘s age, however I did enjoy the storyline and the general writing style is easy to follow.

I think it could have probably been longer and more detailed but for a quick read, it was enjoyable enough!

rwmg I forget whether I've read that particular one but I found Harry Harrison hilarious as a teenager 2y

Well written and well drawn.

A sad and scary insight into the teenage years of Jeffrey Dahmer.

Troubled from the start, with a family that never paid him any attention, no friends and completely isolated, life was very lonely for Dahmer.

Haunted by his thoughts and fantasies, this is the start of him becoming a monster who would go on to kill.

A really interesting though sad (for all involved) read.

Ugh I‘m not really sure how I feel about this one.

The writing style feels very jumbled, with over the top descriptions of things that aren‘t even related to the story or what‘s happening, quite often I felt lost.

The only redeeming feature is Area X itself, there isn‘t much to go on, on what‘s really happening in this abandoned and disturbed place.

If I read the next book, I hope I get some more clarity because I feel a bit let down.

shanaqui If I remember rightly, the whole trilogy is very much in the same vein -- I enjoyed it all, but I can't say I remember much by way of explanations! 2y

Ima is the Erta who takes on the task of bringing up Reed.

As he grows and changes she realises she loves her child, and will do almost anything to protect him.

A story that revolves around a mothers love, a species destroyed, a planet remade. I loved this one, this will stick with me for a while 🌍

The twist was something I didn‘t see coming, such an original and cool idea. As Santi and Thora navigate through their many lives, they have to find the real meaning of their constant reincarnation.

As long as they find each other they‘ll be ok, such a sweet story about friendship, fate and learning to grow as a person in different stages of life.

Definitely recommend this one!

Didn‘t grab me like I‘d hoped. A wishy washy romance, a wishy washy fight for rights, this book didn‘t know whether it was a romance novel or a paranormal novel.

I really liked Daphne as a character, her unrelenting loyalty to her friends is admirable.

Certainly the topic is on point and relatable to the world we live in today - a group of people segregated for things they can‘t help and wouldn‘t change.

A meh read.

I felt it was too detailed in places and went off on a tangent.

Such a unstable and unsure walk of life, mostly based on youth, beauty and allure, and once those you were gone you didn‘t have much going for you. Securing a wealthy man early in life was absolutely imperative.

I felt sad for these women, rich and beautiful but all could fall down in the blink of an eye.

Such a strange and disturbing story.

In the town of Midwich, a ‘dayout‘ happens where everyone falls unconscious, when they wake, all the women of childbearing age are pregnant.

The Children are strange, they all appear alike, they can communicate telepathically and they appear as one rather than separate entities.

Where did they come from and what do they want?

Creepy, atmospheric, and well written. Another good one from Wyndham.

Some jarring reading, what strength it must take to be a heart surgeon dealing with dying patients including children.
Westabys memoir of his life as a heart surgeon is insightful, and interesting, his sadness at the failing NHS we all know of is relatable, once the best health service in the world, now on its knees.

All I can say is what a remarkable man, I can‘t imagine how strong and calm you must be to operate in such desperate conditions.
