Papi | Rita Indiana, Rita Indiana Hernndez

Currently reading (to my mami). So excited to finally get my hands on this book (and her other books). It was one of my first tasks in Santo Domingo! I had to beg my family to let me walk into the bookstore (they know how much time I love to spend in them). #RitaIndiana #DominicanRepublic #diversebooks #latinxwriters #latinxauthors

And a good book is essential for riding the subway in New York. There aren't enough published memoirs about abortion. It's important to share our stories with each other. #pooryoursoul #miraptacin #abortionstories #memoir

Kindred | Octavia E. Butler
post image

A good book to listen to is essential for riding the bus. I first read Kindred in 2010 and I am revisiting it (and all of Octavia Buter's books) in audiobook form. I highly recommend it. Riding the bus in New York and dealing with the MTA's shenanigans is not recommended. #favoriteauthor #octaviabutler #kindred #freeblackwomenslibrary reading challenge #audiobook #womenshistorymonth

Clay's Ark | Octavia E. Butler

I found these gems at the house of books. Octavia Butler books are so hard to find and I love the cover art on the paperbacks of older sci-fi novels. #octaviabutler #bookstore #books #scifi #scifibookcovers

SuperPunkNinja Ooh! I've never heard of Clay's Ark before. 7y
Liatrek Love finding the older cover for books😊 7y
Lesliereads 😍 7y
melissa.in.books Old covers are the best! 7y
melissa.in.books @McShelfington It's one of the books in the Patternist / Seed to Harvest Series. I read it a while ago, but couldn't resist picking up this copy. The old covers are fantastic! 7y

Native Tongue | Suzette Haden Elgin

I went to the largest bookstore in Canada (according to their sign), and bought some amazing sci-fi books, including a copy of native tongue (actually all three books in the series) with an amazing cover! It was an entire house with floor to ceiling books. #scifi

Reecaspieces I could spend hours and hours there!! 7y

Birth Work as Care Work: Stories from Activist Birth Communities | Silvia Federici, Alana Apfel, Victoria Law
post image

Sometimes when I go to listen to abortion stories there are some damn good books in the house and I get to use them as mic props. These were all part of her story. The Argonauts and Of Woman Born are on my TBR list. I love The Handmaid Tale (one of my absolute favorites). And she gifted me her copy of "Birth Work as Care Work."

Parable of the Sower | Octavia E. Butler
post image

My favorites! #OctaviaButler's Parable of the Sower and Parable of the Talents are both .25 cents each on kindle right now. Just because the world seems like it's ending doesn't mean we can't read good books. It's actually probably the best time to read her books.

Kassi's book just arrived in the mail and I am so excited to read it!

RadicalReader @melissa.in.books I misread what you wrote and thought you wrote " I am scared to read this" and was thinking why would somebody get a book if they're scared to read it 7y
melissa.in.books No, was not scared 😂 I just finished reading it and it was fantastic. 7y

Persepolis Two | Marjane Satrapi

Books 5 and 6 of 2017 are Persepolis I and II. I loved this part of the book (reading vacations are the best vacations), but the book felt ominous to me as we head into Trump-apocalypse.

Warm Worlds & Otherwise | James JR. Tiptree

Found this gem on one of the science fiction shelves at a used bookstore in Toronto. For those who don't know #jamestiptreejr was a pseudonym used by #alicebradleysheldon. I'm focused on reading books, especially sci-fi, written by women this year.

This is my fourth book of 2017, and third for #thefreeblackwomenslibrary 2017 reading challenge. I wasn't wowed by it but thought it was okay. I've been wanting to read one of her other books, but now I'm not sure. I'll give it a try and hope I like it better. #diversebooks

This is my third book of 2017, and a #reread / audiobook listen for me. It's still one of my favorite books. So timely and important. Claire Danes narration is fantastic and I loved listening to it. It was a great choice for a first #audiobook.

First book bought in 2017. I have been looking for a copy of this book for months. I've looked for it in so many used bookstores in so many cities. Now here it is in my hands. I found it in a used bookstore in Toronto. I can't wait to read it!

Unexpected Stories | Octavia E. Butler
post image

First book read in 2017, and last Octavia Butler book I had left to read. I am so sad. The first Octavia Butler book I read was Parable of the Sower and I read all of the rest of her books rather quickly. She got me in to sci-fi. I waited over two years to read this collection (it's been sitting in my kindle since 2014) because I didn't want to really be done with all her books. No one compares to #octaviaebutler. #diversebooks2017

Liatrek Oh man I feel the same way! I've been slowly working through her books because I know limited. Kindred was my first and Fledgling my second. I was totally hooked! I have two books to finish in Seed to Harvest and the Lilith Brood series to start. 7y
melissa.in.books Oh, I envy you. Enjoy and savor every word :) 7y
melissa.in.books Also, #thefreeblackwomenslibrary reading challenge book 1. 7y
