Third book in The Cruel Prince Series and my favorite. The pace and plot are the best of the three, although reading the others is necessary to understand the characters. Each is a short read.
Third book in The Cruel Prince Series and my favorite. The pace and plot are the best of the three, although reading the others is necessary to understand the characters. Each is a short read.
PlOT TWIST! Mystery with many characters and a good plot. The author is repetitive, and I felt like it made the book drag on at times. If you like "who done its," this is a worthy read.
Second in the series, slow start, much of the same, but had a really great ending. It made me mad. Now I have to read the last book.
Excellent story with great characters! Fantasy, YA. In a divided world ruled by Gardernerians, Elloren doesn't fit. She looks like her famous grandmother, who is both loved and despised. Yet Elloren isn't powerful like the Black Witch. Pressured to be someone she isn't, Elloren discovers who she really is.
Dystopia; good v evil in a world where death is no longer a natural part of life. When two apprentices are pitted against each other, the old guard and new guard are revealed and as always power corrupts, or does it?
Sequel to Fourth Wing; fantasy, action, romance, and heartbreak. This book brings back a great cast of characters and introduces new people in the mix. Being a second year means risking friendship as well as life and limb as Violet & Xaden struggle to decide who should know what and how to trust each other.
Book 1 of 3...my addiction to series continues with another fantasy. Jude, a human, forced to live in the land of Fairie, has to come to terms with who she is and what she'll have to do to survive. This is a good fantasy story without the use of foul language or explicit sex.
3rd book, Inheritance Games. Liked it better than the second, but not as much as the first. I'm not opposed to the unbelievable, but as this series goes on, I find the antics tired and less possible to believe. Same thing as books: one and two...another riddle, another bad guy, and a love triangle that goes nowhere for me. I'm rating it so so because I did like it better than book two. I think there are more, but I'll pass
YA. Male point of view; fantasy. This story reminded me of Marvel or DC comics and had lots of action. I had difficulty enjoying the story because it was, for me, predictable. Those looking to read fantasy without romance might find this a good choice.
Book 2, YA...meh. Same story different plot. I liked it enough to finish it, but the first was better. This felt redundant.
Loved this book. Full of action...um, yes from all angels. Great characters...liked them all, even the unlikable. Plot twist? Yes. Sequel? Yes. Got them both for Christmas, and I'm a little obsessed with this romantacy, plus dragons. Yes, please!
Recommended by my co-worker and fabulous librarian, this YA book is a great mystery full of puzzles & riddles. It is the first in a trilogy. A billionaire dies, leaving more than money behind. His spoiled heirs might even kill for it.
YA. When Nailer and Pima find a ship after a storm, all they can think about is the scavenge for wealth. Instead, they find a human who changes their view of life, making them the richer for it, but not before they learn that Ship Breaker and Swanks can work together without fear and hatred.
This is the 2nd book in the Crescent City series. Bryce, Hunt, and company continue their lives intending to be normal, inconspicuous, albeit flamboyant, all gorgeous with sex on their minds constantly. Instead, they are drawn to solve the mystery of a dissappearance and discover the source of Asteri power, putting them in more danger than ever.
Raw. Brutal. Sad. Highly emotionally charged account of serving in Vietnam. A love story of boys becoming men. A bitter love story and one that can't be forgotten. This is a must read non-fiction. This is a story of love.
Book 3 Razorland Trilogy; Deuce and company learn that life for the outpost depends upon living and not hiding. In a kill or be killed situation, she takes the men after the Freaks and an epic battle to secure the right to live.
Book 2, Deuce, Fade, Stalker & Tegan find respite in Salvation an outpost in where others have survived for years. Little do they know, but the Freaks are evolving, and the town is in danger. In this book, Deuce learns what it means to love and be loved, and she will do anything to protect that love.
Dystopia, zombie, series, YA. Good story about survival, relationships, and fear. Duece has grown up underground and taught that no life exists topside except for the freaks that feast on humans. When she and another are exiled, they learn the truth.
Depressing pretty much throughout the whole book and even the "happy ending" was a farce...too many lies and too much heartache to heal. This is the only Hannah book I have not liked. Maybe I'm in a mood.
Bringing back an author I used to read with the Odd Thomas series. This is book 2. I adored book 1, but this one was flat for me. I think this is a transition book, so I will read the next. I had difficulty buying into this story and the ghosts that populated the first were largely absent. This was a different crime to solve with another psycho, but I found it tedious.
Excellent story with an ending I didn't foresee. Maas does a phenomenal job of building her world & characters. Still this is so so for one reason: I'm not opposed to emotion or sexual relationships in stories, but her constant use of language like come, cock & f--k as well as super explicit sex really disappoint me. A well placed expletive & an imagination can be just as powerful in a story as good as hers. She's too good to prostitute a book.
Holy Moly! As a teacher and a lover of humanity; a fan of a great imagination and story, this book brought it all to me in a heartfelt story of survival in a zombie apocalypse. This is NOT your normal zombie book. It's fascinatingly horrible and heartwarming all at once, this is a unique book. I could not put it down.
A spin-off from the Fable series, this book is a story of the Roth family, in particular, Bryn. Fated to join the family business, Bryn learns to navigate her Uncle's demands while saving herself and the one she loves most in the family.
I really enjoyed this series. This book brings all of the characters into one place and culminates in a war to overthrow the evil Queen Levana. I will admit to sometimes being bored and struggling to feel that the book was dragging on. Overall, though I liked it and, as Book 4 of the series, you just can't miss out on the end of the story!
This is the fourth book (novella, really) of the Lunar Chronicles and focuses on the villain in the series. Good book with some interesting insight into her evil ways... I almost felt sorry for her, but then I didn't.
Murder mystery with romance. Good story, likable characters; a Robert's classic through and through.
Book 3 of the Lunar Series is full of action and new characters-- a band of misfits who prepare to take on the wicked queen, but first they need to have a plan. Kidnapping the prince sounds about right. With just the right amount of romance, this book has me rooting for the good guys.
Supernatural meets mystery in this first book in the Odd Thomas series. A quirky, likable guy, Odd sees the dead. They don't speak, but they do communicate with him. It's this "gift" that allows him to track a murderer and attempt to foil his plans. Full of humor, love, and a little bit scary, this is a good read.
The last book in this series, The Glass Throne, is a monster of a book. I enjoyed it thoroughly, but I like war strategy. Those who find that tedious might struggle with the book. The characters have been with me all summer through eight books, and I was in tears at the close of this series. Well done, Maas.
Book 6 (7 with prequel--read it first) is why I like Maas so much. In this book she takes one of the beloved characters from the earlier books & makes him the main focus; his thoughts, feelings and perceptions as well as his struggle brings such depth to her series of books. This book will intro new characters and lands as well as bring some from the past back (read the prequel first!) If you like book series, try the Throne of Glass!
Book 2 Scarlet of France's grandmother goes missing and it is indeed the Wolf who took her, but not like you suspect! There is an intergalactic battle about to happen as Lunar fights to conquer earthens. Cinder & Scarlet meet. This is a FUN series. Looking forward to Book 3.
YA. And a good book with a modern sci-fi take on the fairy tale Cinderella. The characters are very well written, and the story had me burning up the pages. Not a big fan of Sci-fi, I had not considered thus series, but I really liked it and will read the next 7 or 8 😁
A fascinating man of mythical proportions George W. Carver, most notably the "peanut man," was first & foremost a man of faith on a mission to help "his people." Hersey contends Carver was an environmentalist, artist, teacher & a man who spent his entire life sharing his love of nature with anyone who would listen, most of it in the Jim Crow South & the Tuskegee Institute. Carver has a unique history & I found this biography very interesting.
Hello spicy. This book sizzles. For this series it's really a first. It also combines many of the former books (this is Throne series #6, including the prequel) characters into an awesome, action-packed fantasy. I really liked seeing the old characters brought back. Some phrases are overused; I do an occasional eyeball roll, but I just love the story. Perhaps I'll read a book from another author to cleanse my palette before the next adventure.
Celeana Sardothien, assassin, banished to Wendlyn for safety discovers that she's been withholding her true identity from even herself. She meets Rowan a fierce Fae Warrior who is tasked with training her once again. She hates Rowan, and the feeling is mutual. All she needs to do is train so she can get more answers to Elena's mysterious clues. This series is good enough that I forgot to write my review and went straight to the next book.
I loved this tale! Maas is an absolute favorite. Book 3 of the Throne of Glass saga of Celeana Sardothien. Full of new characters & hidden magic, this story is rich. Revelations of the characters, along with ntroductions of new people, made this my favorite in the series so far. For me, Maas is a slow burn. I always feel like the first book or two in her series are slower ( she's great at world building), but then the stories take off!
This is the second book on the Throne of Glass series. It's an adventure in the realm of kings, warriors and fae but it does sizzle like Maas' series A Court of Thorns and Roses. Nevertheless, this a good book and a great YA alternative. I liked this book better than the first and the prequel. It becomes apparent who Celaena Sardothien is truly and why she is such a ferocious assassin.
Whew! Another great book in the series A Court of Thorns & Roses, this one takes you in a journey through Nesta's point of view. As bitterness and loathing give way, a warrior servant emerges--one who finds herself unexpectedly in the midst of a most joyous life. Be ready for sizzle and not a little as she and Cassian find what entertains one another the most.
A fictional account of a true place that was encased in urban legend, Willowbrook, a government underfunded institution, is where discarded children went in the 70s. When Sage learns she has a sister there, she is compelled to find her. Instead, she finds a serial killer is loose, and she is trapped. With no one on her side, Sage clings to the two who do believe her. This book is terrifyingly disturbing and, unfortunately, predictable.
Book 4 of the ACTOCAR series is a sweet, brief story in which the Feyre's inner circle each gets a voice in chapters of their own. All are healing from a brutal battle and hoping to restore peace as they celebrate the friendship and family they have created.
Dark. Disturbing. Sad. Child abuse survivor Lex comes home to settle her parents' estate with her siblings, each of whom carry their own baggage of horrific abuse into adulthood. While I believe it was written beautifully, it left me with more questions, and I was unsatisfied in the end.
Book 3 of the ACOTAR series is my favorite as I like rich story, adventure, battles, and new character revelations. Rhys, Feyre and family battle the wicked king of Hybern in an attempt to reunite fae and human in a "new" world.
YA. Prequel to Throne of Glass. Learn why Caelena Sardothian, the assassin's darling, was betrayed & by whom. I didn't like Caeleana's character and found phrases such as ".. a smile tugged at the corner of his mouth" as overused & worthy of an eyeball roll. This is the first Maas book I have not liked. I don't think it added to the series, but I may find her getting revenge on her betrayer more to my liking with this background knowledge.
Excellent nonfiction for history nerds like me. This is the story of a KGB double agent working for Britain during the 70s and 80s Cold War Era. With big time leaders such as Andropov, Thatcher, Reagan and Gorbachev leading the free and not so free world, Oleg Gordievsky risked his life, sacrificed his personal peace and helped orchestrate the downfall of the Soviet Empire. This book reads much like a novel. I was entranced by the spy world.
Book 2 of ACOTAR. This is masterful! I don't know if she wrote this one first or not, but this book makes A Court of Thorns and Roses look like a prequel. Feyre is once again a warrior, but of a different mind. Broken almost beyond repair, she learns to live again. The lands of Prythian are enlarged, and my character crush, Rhysand is sexier than ever. Thrilling, imaginative, full of action and spice, ACOTAR book 2 is so very good.
Chilling. An absolute page turner if your stomach and heart can handle it. This is the true story of a sadistic wife and mother, an rural serial killer and the sisters who survived her. True Crime at its most unbelievable, and Olsen tells the story well with not a little irony.
Given slavery or freedom, Celaena Sardothien chooses freedom-- the cost, a competition to see who can become the king's champion and personal assassin for hire. Not only must she compete against other ruthless assassins, but dark magic & jealously, too, as she catches the eye of the prince. YA & not as sensual as other Maas books such as A Court of Thorns and Roses.
Can you say "Plot Twist" 5x really fast? That is what you'll get in this complicated mystery where family secrets and money are powerful motives. The characters are oddly quirky...mysteries within themselves & then there is the 20 year old murder for which an innocent woman's life hangs in the balance and time is running out. With references to Nancy Drew, it felt very much like a modern Nancy tale.
A spin-off from the fabulous books Fable and Namesake (previous reviews) this one--might be my fave? It's the story of Fable's father & mother, a mysterious relationship in the first 2 books & the story of Saint's risw to becoming a feared and ruthless trader on the Unnamed Sea. Adventure, danger romance, gems & loveable characters, Young spins an imaginative tale allowing me to marvel at her stories. For best results, read them in order. YA
I read Baldacci because my FIL loves his stories and passes the books on. This one involves 4 characters from series who come together to solve several crimes. I liked the fresh take on the relationship these characters formed. Murder mystery, gov conspiracy, FBI meets CIA & some hometown heroes blend to make this an enjoyable book.
