I really enjoyed this eerie, atmospheric mystery novel set in the Outer Hebrides. I'm glad I chose the audiobook format so that I could hear all the cool Gaelic and Old Norse words pronounced properly. The story was also enchanting and held some unforeseen twists.

Interesting sequel that is actually a prequel, we get to know the stories of the Jack & Jill we met in the first book.

SM is an amazing writer and an even more amazing person. The “about the author“ page she wrote about herself at the end of this book makes me adore her. This story was twisted and wicked and creepy – so it was awesome! The characters were unique and lovable. Great fantasy / horror book.

If you're familiar with the books of MB, you'll know what to expect: a strong female character emerging from the shadows of history and making an impression on the world. This one's about Hedy Lamarr, a beautiful Austrian lady who made a difference not only with her famous movies but also with something less expected.

I liked this one a bit more than the first book. The ending was a bit too dramatic for me though.

'The novel ends with one of the most reverberating shocks in modern crime fiction.'
Well I guess the problem is with me then. The twist at the end really is neat, but I didn't enjoy the whole of the book. Instead of being intrigued and interested I was mostly annoyed and frustrated. I didn't like the detective and I wasn't much impressed with the writing (maybe the translation wasn't the best either). ⬇️

starlight97 I think I might've bailed if not for respect for the person who recommended it to me. 1mo
starlight97 What I liked about the book is that it taught me new things about a topic I didn't know much about (this time about Claude Monet and his legacy) and it did that well. 1mo

Evelyn Hugo is a strong and badass woman who quickly learnt how to grab life by the balls and take things for herself, make herself great. She also hurt a lot of people on the way to fame. I think her story is interesting and educational for all women.
The ending wasn't a huge 'omg' for me, but it was a nice read.

Chrissyreadit @Jari-chan did you grow up in Switzerland? @starlight97 what genre do you like to read? I am of Hungarian descent but do not know many books that have been translated to English to give me a flavor of Hungary. 7mo
starlight97 @Jari-chan so how do you know Hungarian? 😅 I'm from the Great Plain, currently live in Baja by the river Danube, near the Serbian border 😊 7mo
starlight97 @Chrissyreadit I read mostly anything except romance 😄 there are some great books that have been translated to English, I can recommend the works of Magda Szabó for example 😊 7mo
Jari-chan @Chrissyreadit Yes, I'm about 100% Swiss 😅 @starlight97 I've spent a year in Hungary. Also some months in Szeged 😊 7mo
Chrissyreadit I have stacked The Door, and am curious as well as ignorant about genres- so many books i see from Eastern Europe are more serious- but i feel like i rarely see more light (Like Jane Austen‘s) or fantasy - are there good options of those genres through a Hungarian lens that you know of? Also what is a popular children‘s book? 7mo
starlight97 @Jari-chan ah I see! Did you like it? 😊 7mo
starlight97 @Chrissyreadit there are some Hungarian authors who write sci-fi and fantasy under pseudonyms, like Brandon Hackett, Leslie L. Lawrence or Vavyan Fable. I'm not really up to date with children's books but some I loved as a kid were by István Csukás, Veronika Marék, Éva Janikovszky or Zoltán Zelk. I'm not sure if these were ever translated though. 7mo
Chrissyreadit ❤️ that‘s great for me to look up though- thank you. my Father was very proud of being Hungarian but i only know a tiny bit. 7mo

This book's magical system is the most obscure I've ever read. I still don't get most of it. And I know the author warns that his books are quite different from each other, but I expected something more along the line of The Broken Empire trilogy (which I loved). Well, my bad. I'm not saying this was a complete waste of time, definitely not, but I don't think I'll continue to read this series. 💔

This is a graphic dramatization of the Ed Gein case – the one that inspired the character of Norman Bates in the book and movie Psycho and partially the character of Buffalo Bill in The Silence of the Lambs.
