#OnThisDay #Nov23

I am grateful this Thanksgiving 2023, for John Milton's denouncement of censorship all the way back in 1644. His powerful advocacy for freedom of speech resonates as a cornerstone in the foundations of numerous justice systems worldwide. History repeats itself, and it behooves us to be ready to fight for principles that continue to be threatened throughout the history of man.

“A good book is the precious life-blood of a master spirit, embalmed and treasured up on purpose to a life beyond life.”
— John Milton, Areopagitica

Stopped in at the New York Public Library (Stephen A. Schwarzman Building in midtown) yesterday and stumbled on this Milton quote in the public catalog room.
