Not as compelling of a story as Oblomov, in my opinion, but still a decent, ironic coming of age tale about a boy (Alexander) from the country with big dreams moving to St. Petersburg where his hopes, aspirations and lovesickness are stamped out by his pragmatic, authoritarian uncle. The ending sees a bit of a reversal whereby Alexander years later essentially becomes his uncle, while his uncle softens and regrets influencing Alexander this way.
