The first in the historically rich, atmospheric mystery series featuring female exorcist Reverend Merrily WatkinsThe new vicar had never wanted a picture-postcard parishor a huge and haunted vicarage. Nor had she wanted to walk into a dispute over a controversial play about a 17th-century clergyman accused of witchcraft, a story that certain long-established families would rather remained obscure. But this is Ledwardine, steeped in cider and secrets. A paradise of cobbled streets and timber-framed houses. And alsoas Merrily Watkins and her teenage daughter, Jane, discovera village where horrific murder is a tradition that spans centuries.

Rickman weaves British history with the supernatural and the contemporary in sleepy, ancient English villages. I especially love how thick his books are, the longer the better for savoring. Female vicar Merrily's challenges dovetail so well with the resolution to the core mystery in this first book. She also has a tense, but loving, relationship with her teenage daughter. This relationship felt real to me and I appreciated its inclusion.

Crime and a bit of the occult. Interesting mix and Phil Rickman deliveres it well. Good start for a series, will read more of it.

This was a very enjoyable gentle mystery and book 1 in the series which had a supernatural element to it. If i didn't have umpteen other book stacked up id probably get around to book 2.

Mystery with a touch of fantasy. A friend suspected I would love this, and she was right!

I wasn't entirely sure that this would be my cup of cider - female vicar in English village, mysterious goings-on - it all sounded a bit cosy, even twee. Actually it's a terrific read -more Straw Dogs than Midsomer Murders. Merrily Watkins, despite her unfortunate name is a great character and stroppy teenage daughter Jane even more so. The plot is batshit crazy but in a good way. Will definitely read more.

Those back stairs are very useful. You could go through life really ignorant if you didn't listen at doors.

"Gomer studied her. She'd never been what you'd call pretty, but there was a time when she could've had her pick of men. And, from what he'd heard, she'd picked a fair few in her time and thrown them back a bit more out-of-breath than they might've reckoned on. But time passed."
