Everyone loves the ladybug. She‘s cute and small and shy, a bright, delightful, friendly sort and pleasing to the eye

“Cricket in the Thicket” written by Carol Murray and illustrated by Melissa Sweet is a great poetry book to teach about bugs and nature, while also teaching about poetry and the cadence and fluency you need to speak it out loud. You could read this book as a guided reading focusing on different things each time you read. Such as specifically the insects one day, the words and rhyming the next and so on.

something I really enjoyed was the table of contents. Instead of just listing out where the poems are for each bug, they also added a picture of that bug. I think for students who are still struggling to read, this is a nice guide for them.

I think this is a very interesting book! I love that there are lots of different poems all on different bugs. This would be a great book to introduce poetry to students because I believe younger kids are into bugs so if you connect something they‘re interested in to learning, they might retain the information more.
Great poems to read to a science class when they are learning about bugs and insects. Also love the little facts in the bottom corner of the pages.
