In addition to the playful rhyming poems, the supplementary text highlights surprising facts about bugs of all kindsfrom familiar ants to exotic dragonflies, cringe-worthy ticks and magnificent fireflies. Mosquito Bites!

I thought this poem was super cute. It‘s an easy way to help teach young readers about mosquito bites and what causes them to itch.

Mosquito Bites!

This short poem is a cute way of explaining why mosquito bites itch like they do. The rhyming lines describe the process from bite to bump to itch in a fun and flowing way.

I like this book. It is a collection of poems of bugs written from their perspective. I like how the pages are colorful and playful and shorter poems easy for younger students to understand. I like how there are facts on each page.

“Cricket in the Thicket” written by Carol Murray and illustrated by Melissa Sweet is a great poetry book to teach about bugs and nature, while also teaching about poetry and the cadence and fluency you need to speak it out loud. You could read this book as a guided reading focusing on different things each time you read. Such as specifically the insects one day, the words and rhyming the next and so on.

Brennap This is a paired lesson plan to do after reading to focus on vocabulary, phonemic awareness, along with some nature and art activities. This book and the lesson plan support the UDL Principal (2.2)” Clarify syntax and structure” along with the ESOL Strategy 16.” Integrate speaking, listening, reading and writing activities” 4y
DrSpalding What a wonderful poetry anthology! Poetry and science would be fantastic. Your universal design and English learner strategies are spot on. 4y

Erinehart This book is a book of poems about bugs. I would use this book for a RL with a class k-3. There are poems throughout the book of a little cricket. An UDL strategy that I would use for this text is 2.3 “support deciding if text and symbols because a poem could be read differently than a regular text.“ Since poems are to be read differently, it is important to discuss that with the students and acknowledge that it is not just a normal text. (edited) 4y
Erinehart A ESOL strategy that I would use for this book and RL is #20. List the most important words and phrases you use or plan to use.”. Since some poems aren't extremely detailed, it is important the the students are still able to get the information from the text. (edited) 4y

This is a resource for teachers that provides different lesson plans relating to the text.

DrSpalding I am not sure what the RL stands for but I am assuming read aloud. It looks like it would make a fun storytelling too. 4y

something I really enjoyed was the table of contents. Instead of just listing out where the poems are for each bug, they also added a picture of that bug. I think for students who are still struggling to read, this is a nice guide for them.

Poetry- Published in 2017
I think this is a very interesting book! I love that there are lots of different poems all on different bugs. This would be a great book to introduce poetry to students because I believe younger kids are into bugs so if you connect something they‘re interested in to learning, they might retain the information more.

Great poems to read to a science class when they are learning about bugs and insects. Also love the little facts in the bottom corner of the pages.

Published in 2017 and illustrated by Melissa Sweet, this poetry book uses repetition and the use of alliteration to bring the words alive! It is appropriate for children especially because it‘s a book about bugs and children love learning about bugs! The onomatopoeias also attract young readers!

Published in 2017 by Henry Holt. The illustrations in this book make nature so easy to understand by little kids. This would be such a good book to introduce poetry with & get in some science. It even has little facts to go along with each subject.
