An old and dying nun has turned up at Deirdre's monastery in Ireland with an ancient manuscript on a papyrus roll. When Deirdre reads the first line, she realizes it claims to be a previously unknown gospel written by Mary, the mother of Jesus. Freeman is a Celtic scholar & his knowledge of this historical era lends an authenticity to the story often missing in others like it. He has taken an old trope & transported it back in time, when people lived and died by the sword. He has created a smart, gutsy, brave character in Sr. Deirdre & paints a vivid picture of an Ireland teetering between the old religion and new Christianity. Picked this up as an ARC. I am a sucker for Celtic stories, so thought this would be interesting. It is, but I found it less enchanting than Susanna Kearsley and Erin Hart, for example. The author is a Celtic scholar so the historical detail here is well done, but the story is a little wooden at times. Nevertheless, it was a quick and entertaining read. Also 3rd in a series, so now I must go find the others!
