The Cubs and Other Stories
The Cubs and Other Stories | Mario Vargas Llosa
1 post | 2 read | 3 to read
The Cubs and Other Stories is Mario Vargas Llosa's only volume of short fiction available in English. Vargas Llosa's domain is the Peru of male youth and machismo, where life's dramas play themselves out on the soccer field, on the dance floor and on street corners. The title work, The Cubs, tells the story of the carefree boyhood of PP Cuellar and his friends, and of PP's bizarre accident and tragic coming of age. In a candid and perceptive foreword to this collection of early writing, Vargas Llosa provides background to the volume and a unique glimpse into the mind of the artist.

Pickpick

I can‘t believe it, but I think I might be a fan of short stories. This collection is well worth the read. Peruvian stories of machismo (I hope I got that right...), barrio, and other elements of the culture. I recommend reading the introduction by the author as well! He provides some insight into why he wrote this collection. 167/1,001 #1001Books

BarbaraBB Great review again. Another one I want to read. 5y
AshleyHoss820 @BarbaraBB Thank you!! My Non-Western Civ professor had us pick an outside work to compare to our readings during the semester and the themes we‘d been discussing for our 3rd response paper. I picked this one and it was a fun paper to write! 5y
