Stealing: A Novel | Margaret Verble
7 posts | 4 read | 7 to read
A gripping, gut-punch of a novel about a Cherokee child removed from her family and sent to a Christian boarding school in the 1950san ambitious, eye-opening reckoning of history and small-town prejudices from Pulitzer Prize finalist Margaret Verble. Since her mothers death, Kit Crockett has lived with her grief-stricken father, spending lonely days far out in the country tending the garden, fishing in a local stream, and reading Nancy Drew mysteries from the library bookmobile. One day when Kit discovers a mysterious and beautiful woman has moved in just down the road, she is intrigued. Kit and her new neighbor Bella become fast friends. Both outsiders, they take comfort in each others company. But malice lurks near their quiet bayou and Kit suddenly finds herself at the center of tragic, fatal crime. Soon, Kit is ripped from her home and Cherokee family and sent to Ashley Lordard, a religious boarding school. Along with the other Native students, Kit is stripped of her heritage, force-fed Christian indoctrination, and is sexually abused by the director. But Kit, as strong-willed and shrewd as ever, secretly keeps a journal recounting what she remembersand revealing just what she has forgotten. Over the course of Stealing, she slowly unravels the truth of how she ended up at the schooland plots a way out. In swift, sharp, and stunning prose, Margaret Verble spins a powerful coming-of age tale and reaffirms her place as an indelible storyteller and chronicler of history.

This is another I picked up at the Ky book fair last year. A story about Kit, part Native-American, who is writing her story after being placed in a school/group home. She writes about events leading up to her placement, the actions of the “Christians” running the school, & what happens there. Very good story if you can deal with reading some sexual abuse (TW).

This is a heartbreaking and gorgeous book told by Kit, a half Cherokee, half white girl, a wonderful, sometimes naive, sometimes incredibly astute child. Verble has a quiet, masterful way with this story that does not minimize any of the terrible realities chronicled within it. Kit Crockett, what a kid! She is incredibly smart, lovable, kind, giving, strong, and oh what a survivor. She is a young Cherokee girl that has lost her mother to TB. Life sends her evil people, the sad thing is they are people who are not supposed to be evil which makes it all the more shocking.

Jolynne From The NY Times “Stealing” is a chronicle of truth, and Kit is an unforgettable American heroine, the kind we yearn for as young readers and as adults.” 2y

I really wanted to love this because the plot was intriguing. An orphaned half-Cherokee girl is forced into a Christian school while a cast characters observe from the sidelines. It seemed the storytelling was not focused and kept getting bombarded by other plot points. In short, this fell flat for me

It seems that I am constantly learning about authors whose work I have not yet read
. . and my TBR list just keeps growing.

Among them is 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐠𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐭 𝐕𝐞𝐫𝐛𝐥𝐞, a Pulitzer Prize finalist. I was ecstatic when I received a copy of 𝐒𝐭𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠, courtesy of Mariner Books & Bibliolifestyle which promises to be a thoroughly engrossing & deeply affecting story.

Is there an author you have recently discovered?

My latest #shelfsubscription from Annie B Jones at #bookshelftville. Sounds excellent.
