@AmyG What an amazing birthday box! I love everything. Thank you, thank you, thank you, my friend.
I am completely swamped with reading submissions for this year‘s Great Group Reads list so I don‘t have time to participate in the #transrightsreadathon but I thought at the very least, I could highlight 3 wonderful books (2 non-fiction and 1 fiction) centering trans people and that have been on the Great Group Reads list over the past several years.
Ozzie keeps head butting my book. 😂 Not sure if that‘s the cat seal of approval because he‘s marking it or a sign of complete cat disdain!
Reading on the couch with my snuggle puppy this cold and wet Sunday. Gatsby‘s beard is impossibly crusted flat because of her meds but she‘s doing much better and is mostly back to her old self again.
I am finally getting to this little gem that @Aims42 sent me years ago. I am halfway through and find it highly entertaining. 😁
A last minute girls trip and reading on the beach. Not a beach in Corfu (where the novel starts) but beggars can‘t be choosers.
I meant to post this yesterday but forgot. So without looking to see which numbers were chosen, here‘s my March #bookspin and #bookspinbingo board. March is my birthday month so the collection contains books that have been gifted to me over the years, monthly book club choices, books I want to gift to people, and a couple obligated reads. @TheAromaofBooks
Starting another of the #auldlangspine books from @peaknit tonight.
@monalyisha
This is two weeks worth since I forgot to post last week. Some good and different reads this week. #bookreport #weeklyforecast @Cinfhen
I‘m cracking open another one from @peaknit ‘s #auldlangspine list that I didn‘t get to in January and almost didn‘t get to in February!
@monalyisha
#llwbs @StayCurious What a fantastic box! The mug is beautiful, the tea looks delicious, I love bookmarks, and I can‘t wait to dive into the books! Thank you so much.
@Bookgoil @Deblovestoread
Everybody cuddling on the couch.
Such a lovely cover on my latest read with Gatsby and Ozzie.
Gatsby and Ozzie continue to jockey for position on my lap as I start this book club book. I think closest to me wins based on the silliness.
A day late again. I didn‘t read much this past week but it was a good one. #bookreport #weeklyforecast @Cinfhen
I‘m down in Hilton Head to run a race with an old college friend. Well, she‘s running the half marathon and I‘m doing the 5K since I only started running again in October but it should be fun! She‘s working today (the day before the race) so I‘m just sitting here getting ready to start a new book.
Tonight‘s reading on the couch with Gatsby and Ozzie.
A woman writing her thesis about true crime books and cleaning out out her late dad‘s house suspects his cute neighbor of being up to no good. Sounds cute, right? I wish I‘d liked it as much as I wanted to. Full review at http://booknaround.blogspot.com/2023/02/review-love-in-time-of-serial-killers.ht...
I stayed up late last night finishing Go As a River so sleep claimed me before I posted this. #bookreport #weeklyforecast @Cinfhen
Now that I need to make my new month‘s #bookspinbingoboard, I need to post January because I actually did get a bingo. Almost completely unheard of for me and might not happen again all year. 🤣😂🤣😂🤣 @TheAromaofBooks
Ozzie has joined me on my lap tonight while Gatsby sulks at the end of the couch. Normally he‘s quite against reading (#kittensagainstliterature) but it seems he‘s okay with romances. Not sure he‘s romance hero material but he is quite handsome so maybe.
Gatsby is helping me read this one on the couch tonight.
Here‘s my February #bookspin and #bookspinbingo list. It‘s romances/love stories, book club books, more #auldlangspine choices from @peaknit , and books I want to pass along to family members. @TheAromaofBooks
Gatsby and I are at the vet again to check her med level and make sure she‘s getting enough to beat this fungus.
A day late and a dollar short! I only managed to read two books from @peaknit ‘s #auldlangspine list but I do intend to keep reading from her list throughout the year since I enjoyed the two I read (adored Remarkably Bright Creatures). My reading unfortunately suffered for the month with poor Gatsby getting so sick. (Don‘t her lungs look like she‘s inhaled blowsy dandelion heads?) Blasto stinks!
Thank you @monalyisha for such a wonderful event.
My fabulous haul from the Women‘s National Book Association book exchange at my house last night.
I enjoyed each of the finished books. I‘m still plugging away at The Wings of the Dove but I‘m enjoying Wintering a lot more so that‘ll probably get finished this week while the other could/likely will carry over yet again. 😂 #bookreport #weeklyforecast @Cinfhen
This was written by a friend of mine and just released on Tuesday. It‘s the first in a trilogy. I‘m really looking forward to reading it before the book launch party next month.
Tonight‘s book on the couch with Gatsby. At her recheck today, her X-rays are unchanged, which is a disappointment but her liver and kidney values are good so she can stay on the meds that are most effective at fighting this. If I had to guess, I think she feels marginally better despite the unchanged X-rays.
Today‘s book on the couch with Gatsby.
You‘d think I‘d read a lot sitting on the couch with Gatsby but I‘ve been super distracted. 🤷♀️ #bookreport #weeklyforecast @Cinfhen
Today‘s couch read with Gatsby.
This is an intricately plotted read for historical mystery readers, especially those who like a heavy dose of the politics of the time (English attitudes towards the Irish and Irish Home Rule) with their stories, with a spot on sense of time and place and a sometimes troubling parallel to life, beliefs, and media today. Actors filming a new tv show, the Secretary of State, the Nantucket Christmas Stroll, and two similar murders. This is a well written and entertaining mystery. Full review at http://booknaround.blogspot.com/2022/12/review-death-on-winter-stroll-by.html?m=...
When Gatsby‘s well, she loves sitting on my lap as I read. I think she needs it even more when she‘s so sick. Picking this one up for today‘s couch reading.
There are five different stories in this tale the very human need for stories and for the people who cherish and pass them through the ages. The different threads take a while to come together but they eventually do, rewarding the reader who perseveres with a complex and ambitious novel. This historical fiction set in a women‘s mental institution is positively horrifying but completely gripping as it tackles important subjects like eugenics, racism, anti-Semitism, and women‘s bodily autonomy. Sorry for the delay @peaknit . Gatsby is still having a rough go of it and my mind is pretty scattered (and sleep deprived).
1. Somewhere under the Northern Lights, likely in an igloo type structure.
2. Whatever I have bookmarks in at any given moment.
#Two4Tuesday @TheSpineView
A trio of sisters drowned as witches come back every summer to take revenge on the town that killed them by drowning teenaged boys. This had so many plot holes and problems that it became absolutely ridiculous. Full review at http://booknaround.blogspot.com/2022/11/review-wicked-deep-by-shea-ernshaw.html?...
It was a hard week last week so I needed something I assume will end well so I picked this one up from the #auldlangspine list I got from @peaknit . It‘s delightful so far.
I didn‘t have the greatest reading week since Miss Gatsby spent 3 days in the ER. Turns out she has blasto, which is endemic to the UP where we spend our summers but is not common at all down here. It‘s a terrible fungal infection of the lungs and she‘s been in bad shape but seems to be improving. I didn‘t have the brain power to read though as we tried to figure it all out. #bookreport #weeklyforecast @Cinfhen
I read anything connected to Jane Austen and while this is not a Jane Austen story, or a retelling, it is certainly adjacent as it is the fictionalization of the years that Anne Sharp was the governess to Jane‘s niece Fanny. It is full of great historical details and the reality for women of the time. Full review at http://booknaround.blogspot.com/2022/10/review-godmersham-park-by-gill-hornby.ht...
A heartfelt book about parenthood, adoption, and infertility, crossed with a thriller, this story of a couple looking to adopt and the pregnant teenager who has chosen them to be her baby‘s parents isn‘t black and white by any stretch and will push the reader to examine their thoughts on the ethics around this potentially devastating topic. Inspired by the true story of the first female, Black doctor in the US, this is a novel of strong women, mothers and daughters, and freedom. Full review at http://booknaround.blogspot.com/2022/10/review-libertie-by-kaitlyn-greenidge.htm...
I‘d argue this US and Eurocentric collection is hardly the “world‘s” best. It isn‘t diverse in any way (only 3 of the 20 stories are written by women and there are few authors of color). The stories are definitely canonical and anyone with a large number of English classes in their background will have already read most of these.
