A Country You Can Leave: A Novel | Asale Angel-Ajani

"Asale Angel-Ajani is an explosive talent. . . . You won’t want to miss a single detail of what happens in that hot, messy trailer park town.” —Xochitl Gonzalez, author of Olga Dies Dreaming A stunning debut novel following the turbulent relationship of a Black, biracial teen and her ferocious Russian mother, struggling to survive in the California desert. When sixteen-year-old Lara and her fiery mother, Yevgenia, find themselves homeless again, the misnamed "Oasis Mobile Estates" in the Californian desert is all they can afford. In this new community where residents are down on their luck but rich in humour and escape plans, Lara navigates what it means to be the Black daughter of a Russian mother and begins to wonder what a life beyond Yevgenia’s orbit—her insistence on reading only the right kind of books (Nietzsche, Dostoyevsky) and having the right kind of relationships (casual, with lots of sex)—might look like. Lara knows that something else lies beneath her mother’s fierce, independent spirit, but Yevgenia doesn't believe in sharing, least of all with her daughter. When a brutal attack exposes the cracks in their relationship, Lara and Yevgenia are forced to confront the family legacy of violence and the strain of inherited trauma on the bonds of their love. A Country You Can Leave is a dazzling, sharp-witted coming-of-age story suffused with yearning, as Lara and Yevgenia attempt to forge their own identities and thrive in a hostile land. Compelling and empathetic, wry and intimate, Asale Angel-Ajani's unforgettable debut novel examines the beauty and dangers of womanhood in multiracial America.

A compelling mother/daughter story. Yevgenia is a sexy, brash, tough-as-nails Russian immigrant. Lara is her Black teenage daughter who lives in her mother's shadow. Together they have a unstable, transient life, moving whenever Yevgenia's restlessness sets in. The book begins as they land in a trailer park in a CA desert town. Old family patterns are hard to break but Lara begins to build relationships with people in the trailer park & beyond👇

merelybookish Lara starts to discover more about herself and realize that while while she can't change her mother, she can change how she sees herself. I appreciated the nuanced depiction of a complicated mother/daughter dynamic that is impacted by violence, cultural difference, poverty, and racism. I also liked how Lara's growth was depicted. And the ending felt right. #netgalley. 2y

This was a wonderful coming-of age story about a 16-year old black girl being raised by her neglectful white Russian mother. The mom dresses like a hooker, has strong opinions and is always broke. Each chapter starts with one of the mom's rules about men and sex, where she is for sex as long as it is casual but mistrusting of men. While it is told with humour it is still a rather dark, sad tale with some violence, but I really enjoyed it. 4/5!
