It feels like cheating that this was my December #DoubleSpin, but I can‘t argue with the #BookSpin fates! I loved reading these cozy stories for #KindredSpiritsChristmas—a delightful respite from the busy-ness of the season.

TheAromaofBooks Woohoo!! A lil Christmas gift from the BookSpin Fates haha 6d

Oof. This line stood out to me—how easily can “sharpness” become a habit? Also: I love how deftly LMM draws even her side characters with just a few lines like this!

Our final #KindredSpiritsChristmas story this year is “Bertie's New Year,” from “Christmas with Anne.” It‘s also on Hoopla, or here: https://www.online-literature.com/lucy_montgomery/1905-1906/5/

Thank you all for reading along with me this year! A cozy, merry holiday to you all!

Jerdencon Thank you for hosting and organizing this… it was so nice to spend a few minutes a day escaping to something sweet and wholesome in the midst of all the crazy of the world and business of the holidays. Merry Christmas 🎄🎁 2w
rubyslippersreads Thanks for leading this lovely group of #kindredspirits. I look forward to more LMM in 2026! 2w

Another sweet story of a holiday mishap & giving to others! Also, an appearance from Josie Pye…but not THAT Josie Pye 😆 This story was published pre-Anne, before LMM wrote the familiar disagreeable Pyes! I wonder if she remembered using the name here?

Today‘s #KindredSpiritsChristmas story is “Ida's New Year Cake,” from “Christmas with Anne.” It can also be found on Hoopla, or here: https://www.online-literature.com/lucy_montgomery/1905-1906/11/

Today‘s #KindredSpiritsChristmas story is a New Year‘s one, and it‘s short and sweet. “Uncle Richard's New Year's Dinner” is in “Christmas with Anne,” and it can also be found on Hoopla, or here: https://www.online-literature.com/lucy_montgomery/1909-1922/26/

I do love these stories of long-held grudges and quarrels being overcome at the holidays! And I loved the little references to Prissy longing for her book.

BarbaraJean Tomorrow‘s story is “Ida's New Year Cake,” from the “Christmas with Anne” collection. You can also find it on Hoopla, or here: https://www.online-literature.com/lucy_montgomery/1905-1906/11/ 2w
Jerdencon I thought the same thing - alto of these stories are about forgiving grudges and moving on. Another cute one! 2w
JenlovesJT47 I just finished reading the rest of the stories today. Thank you for hosting!! ♥️💚🤍 2w
BarbaraJean @Jerdencon It seems like it‘s one of LMM‘s favorite themes… and I‘m not mad about it 😁 @JenlovesJT47 I‘ve been thinking I‘ll go ahead and finish the last two stories tonight! 2w
JenlovesJT47 I like them because they‘re sweet and cozy like all of LMM‘s books but they‘re not cheesy like Louisa May Alcott‘s Christmas stories. I read a couple of hers last year and wasn‘t a fan. And I think LMM‘s books remind us most of all to be kind to each other. ♥️💚🤍 2w

“The month before Christmas was always the most exciting and mysterious time in the Joseph household. Such scheming and planning, such putting of curly heads together in corners, such counting of small hoards, such hiding and smuggling of things out of sight, as went on among the little Josephs!”

Today‘s #KindredSpiritsChristmas story is “The Josephs‘ Christmas,” from “Christmas with Anne” (or on Hoopla, or at the link below) ⤵️

This sweet story combines several of LMM‘s favorite Christmas-story tropes: a Christmas mishap, a rich relative saves the day, and a misunderstanding comes right. (Also: I kind of want to read the tramp‘s side of the story…)

I love Rebecca Dew! Now I want to re-read Windy Poplars!

Today‘s #KindredSpiritsChristmas story is “Katherine Brooke Comes to Green Gables,” which is in the “Christmas with Anne” collection. TheAromaofBooks I know many people view Windy Poplars as one of the weaker installments but I LOVE it 😂 3w
BarbaraJean @TheAromaofBooks Me too!! It was always one of my favorites. When we re-read it with this group, I realized why people see it as weaker (it's kind of all over the place 😆), but I still love it. 3w
See All 9 Comments
TheAromaofBooks It's definitely choppy and needs Gilbert!!! But it also has some of my favorite characters, and I actually love Anne being out on her own and actually making use of her hard-earned degree before settling down into married life. 3w
BarbaraJean @TheAromaofBooks Yes to all of that!! What stands out in my memory is the Pringles story arc and Katherine Brooke, both of which are fantastic. And I love that LMM went back and told the story of independent Anne on her own before she got married. (Also, a lot of my opinions/memories of Windy Poplars are filtered through the Kevin Sullivan Anne of Avonlea miniseries, which mashes together some of the best parts of Avonlea, Island, and Poplars.) 3w
lauraisntwilder @BarbaraJean @TheAromaofBooks It's hard for me to separate Katherine Brooke as a character from the actress who plays her in the 80s miniseries. I love her in the miniseries so much. 3w
BarbaraJean @lauraisntwilder Me too!! There was one line in particular in this excerpt that I couldn‘t help but hear in her voice: “prating on about the inexhaustible resources of the Dominion…” 3w
TheAromaofBooks @lauraisntwilder @BarbaraJean - And, as a side note, we all know the 80s miniseries is a big part of why Gilbert has stayed my main book crush. 😂 Jonathan Crombie...!!!! 3w
lauraisntwilder @TheAromaofBooks The scene with the bikes! ? We used to watch these as a family, with my grandparents, too. I remember my grandfather asking, "Is this the one that ends on the bridge?" Even he was invested in Anne and Gil. ? 3w

“The gifts which money can purchase are not the only ones we can give,” said Aunt Emmy gently,
“nor the best, either.”

#KindredSpiritsChristmas - “The Unforgotten One”

This felt a bit too maudlin, a bit too contrived for me this time around…also, what jerks are the family for “unconsciously” leaving Nanny out of reunions because she‘s “only the little orphan ‘help‘ girl”?!

Today‘s story is from the “Christmas with Anne” collection. You can also find it on Hoopla, or in this collection: https://www.gutenberg.org/files/24876/24876-h/24876-h.htm

lauraisntwilder It's melodramatic, for sure, but I like it. I like Nanny for being mad and then being so happy they're all sad, too! 3w
BarbaraJean @lauraisntwilder Nanny's response is sweet, and when I think about it, entirely realistic. So much of grief can be bound up in others' responses. I wonder if I'd feel differently about this one if it/the characters were fleshed out more. 3w

#KindredSpiritsChristmas - “The Osbornes‘ Christmas”

“You've had too much Christmas, you Osbornes,“ she said seriously. “It has palled on your taste, as all good things will if you overdo them. Did you ever try giving Christmas to somebody else?”

monalyisha @BarbaraJean Regrettably, I‘ve fallen off the wagon. If it‘s not too much of a pain, you can remove me from the tag. #KindredSpiritsChristmas - “Aunt Cyrilla‘s Christmas Basket”

Every time I read this, I am staggered by the capacity of Aunt Cyrilla‘s basket (and of her muscle to carry it). This year it occurs to me that the Chinese takeout restaurant my husband and I frequent—where we are convinced they regularly bend the laws of physics by the sheer volume of food they pack into those styrofoam containers—may have received training from Aunt Cyrilla. 😆 ⤵️

BarbaraJean @Jerdencon @JenlovesJT47 @sblbooks Yay! Glad to have you all reading along this year! 🎄 2mo
BarbaraJean @TheAromaofBooks In past years, I didn‘t remember which stories went with which titles (for the most part—I always remember Aunt Cyrilla and her basket!!), but now they‘re starting to look familiar! Also, I added a couple “new” ones this year (not that weird Merryvale one from last year, but a couple others I hadn‘t seen before)—so keep an eye out on Dec. 8 & 9 😁 2mo
BarbaraJean @monalyisha ☺️🤗 2mo

There are a lot of repeated themes and plot devices in these stories, but I think that's forgivable, since LM Montgomery didn't write them to be read together, but instead as freelance writing for various publications. Overall, it's a sweet collection and perfect for a cold night on a warm couch.

Very very sweet stories all variations on some themes: 1) a very poor family cannot afford anything for Christmas and something happens that means the family can have traditional Christmas food and the kids gifts, and 2) there‘s been some rift in the family (normally over inheritance of land) and something happens to heal the rift. I would have preferred some diversity in themes. Short and good for a low-anxiety read. ⬇️

Next up for #KindredSpiritsChristmas is set in a women‘s boarding house. 5 young women who are good friends & can‘t go home for Christmas decide to try to make a happy Christmas for a lonely lady who‘s been living there for 14 years & has no friends & no money. It‘s really sweet & fun & reminds me of Anne & her roommates while she was in college. 4⭐️ 80 points

Yesterday was so busy that I missed both reading and posting! I finished listening to “A Merryvale Christmas” this morning. It‘s a fun story, with kids longing for gifts, a snowball fight, sleigh rides & sledding, and bringing Christmas to the less-fortunate. But especially for a longer story, it felt a bit lacking. I‘m still puzzled by this little Hoopla audiobook and I have notes! ⤵️
#KindredSpiritsChristmas #KindredSpiritsBuddyRead

BarbaraJean I still find it odd that I can‘t find a mention of this story anywhere. It didn‘t NOT feel like LMM, although it wasn‘t particularly distinctive. I could see it being published in one of the boys‘ magazines LMM mentions writing for. The production was odd, with music sort of fading in and out behind the intro, which weirdly went on and on about how great Christmas is. It then gave some background about LMM, but didn‘t really explain where the ⤵️ 13mo
BarbaraJean (Cont‘d) story came from—which is what I most wanted to know! The female narrator was less annoying than the guy who did the intro, but she kept pronouncing “Todd” as “Toad.” ⁉️ Then after the story came a full rendition of Joy to the World and an effusive bio of Geoffrey Giuliano, who I guess started the media company that made the audiobook?! Weird all around. Who else listened to this audiobook? I‘m super interested to hear your thoughts! ⬇ (edited) 13mo
BarbaraJean Tomorrow we‘ll be reading “The Falsoms‘ Christmas Dinner,” which is available on Hoopla (but it‘s NOT a weird audiobook with dubious origins!!), and also in the tagged collection. You can read it online here: https://www.online-literature.com/lucy_montgomery/1905-1906/19/ 13mo

JenlovesJT47 Wasn‘t this so weird??? I‘m glad it‘s not just me. I only gave it a soft pick because it‘s LMM but it didn‘t really feel like one of her stories. Maybe we would have liked it better if we could have read it with our eyeballs. Plus the intro was like 5+ minutes of music and stuff, not to mention the outro. So very strange. 13mo
BarbaraJean @JenlovesJT47 I know, right?! The intro & outro were bizarre. I think I'd have felt differently about this one if I could have read it on the page, without all the weird audiobook quirks.

What's funny is that I had a Hoopla audiobook of A Christmas Carol on my list to read, and this morning I noticed it's from the same media company as this one. I went & found a different version because I don't want the same weird crap with A Christmas Carol 😂
(edited) 13mo
Daisey I checked it out on Hoopla, but I haven‘t had a chance to listen yet. I lost track of when I was supposed to get to it, but I‘ll keep my expectations in check based on your comments. It is weird it seems to be mentioned nowhere else. 13mo
TheAromaofBooks Sounds... interesting 😂 I'm sorry to miss this one, but apparently not TOO sorry haha 13mo
TheAromaofBooks As a side note, will we be starting January by reading Anne of the Island? 13mo
BarbaraJean @Daisey Glad a couple of us could help you lower your expectations! There's a bunch at the beginning and the end that you can skip! 13mo
BarbaraJean @TheAromaofBooks 😂 Yeah, don't bend over backwards to become an audiobook listener for this one! And yes, we will be starting Anne of the Island in January! I haven't put together a graphic yet, but I will soon. This is the plan:
12/29-1/11: Island
1/12-1/18: finish Journals Vol. 3
1/19-2/1: House of Dreams
...unless people want to take a break the week of New Year's? January is being unhelpful by starting in the middle of the week. 😂
13mo
TheAromaofBooks Wednesday holidays are the worst!! 😂 I am good with whatever, especially since Island is an easy, enjoyable reread. I'll be on vacation Jan 4-11 and probably offline for that time, but it's no hardship to work Anne into my program haha 13mo

Well, this starts off with a lengthy intro about how great Christmas is (that I‘m pretty sure was not written by LMM)—and if you want to skip ahead, you can start chapter one around the 7:45 mark! Not a whole lot of story yet in the first two chapters, but I‘m interested to hear the result of the snow fight tomorrow. #KindredSpiritsChristmas #KindredSpiritsBuddyRead ⤵️

BarbaraJean In all my Google searchings, I‘ve only found this as an audiobook on Hoopla. The intro seems to indicate it‘s drawn from several stories and books, but its origins are otherwise a mystery! I‘m interested to see how much of a traditional LMM flavor it has as we listen to the rest. (edited) 13mo
lauraisntwilder Is it just me, or is the narrator pronouncing Todd like toad? 13mo
BarbaraJean @lauraisntwilder It‘s not just you! That annoyed me!! 13mo
TheAromaofBooks I'm not an audiobook person, so I doubt I'll end up listening to this. But I'm very interested to hear what you think of it!! I wonder where this story came from?? I could find nothing about it! 13mo

Here‘s the schedule for week three of our #KindredSpiritsChristmas #KindredSpiritsBuddyRead!

A Merryvale Christmas is available as an audiobook on Hoopla, and the Dec. 18-20 stories are in the tagged collection and online (I‘ll post links in the comments). See my previous post for a little caveat about Merryvale Christmas, which we‘ll be reading over a few days (~15 audiobook minutes per day). Looking forward to another week of cozy stories!

BarbaraJean I've only found A Merryvale Christmas as a Hoopla audiobook. The other stories are all in “Christmas with Anne“ or on Hoopla, and links are below:

Up today for #KindredSpiritsChristmas is bittersweet & gives you all the feels. Nanny is worried everyone has forgotten about dear Miss Avis, who passed away during the previous year. One by one each member of the family visits the cemetery to talk to Avis while Nanny is hiding in the bushes. I‘m not crying, you‘re crying! 5⭐️

I haven‘t kept up with the L.M. Montgomery stories this past week, but I listened to several today on a walk with Luthien and read a couple more once back at the house. I‘ve loved the new ones that I haven‘t read before just as much as those I have. Reading these is such a wonderful way to get into the Christmas spirit! I especially loved “Aunt Cyrilla‘s Christmas Basket” and “The Osbornes‘ Christmas.”

MidnightBookGirl I love Aunt Cyrilla‘s Christmas basket too, mostly because I have an actual Aunt Cyrilla and it‘s the only time I‘ve ever seen that name anywhere else! 13mo

Got a little behind on posting. I read the tagged book a few years ago so I‘m familiar with most of these stories but I‘m enjoying this reread for #KindredSpiritsChristmas - this is another really good one. I so prefer LMM over others like Louisa May Alcott (although I do like her) because of the humor she injects into all of her stories. 4.5⭐️
