Why not France? Wasn't Gascony a viable destination? We archivists, familiar from thousands of letters with the ebb and flow of his wanderlust, had to ask ourselves this question. Why did every thought of ducking out of sight carry him to London, and then on across the border-marking Tweed? What drew him to the Scottish moors, to Macbeth's witches' heath?

It also promises peace and quiet to Waldemar von Haldern.... "A fresh breeze was blowing, tempering the heat, but from the flower beds wafted the delicate scent of mignonne, while across the way, in Kroll's Music Garden, a concert was just commencing..." The Music Garden and the Kroll Opera, built there later, no longer exist. Much has been cleared away, but the Tiergarten manages to renew itself time and again.
