I really enjoyed it. If that is something one can say when a very clear and honest voice points to a lot of awful things that happened and continue to. One or two of the essays didn‘t capture me entirely - mainly because of the subject matter not being my thing. I loved her voice, the humor, the self deprecation and yet somehow it felt like there is some hope left. Even if it is just about the fact that a voice like this is being printed and read.

Finally. Despite expectations continuing to rise through a summer of funny stories, it definitely lived up to them. While probably not my favorite, it was filled with the perfect dialogue and quirky characters that have me once again waiting to what she‘ll do next.

I am not usually a short story seeker. However, these were an absolute surprise and delight. Despite all being sprinkled with melancholy, they were crafted with such love and attention to detail that made reading them a pleasure. My favorite, the Shiitake.

charl08 This was a fun read: I will look out for more of her writing. 9mo

The Nickel Boys: A Novel | Colson Whitehead

I have yet to be disappointed by Colson Whitehead. I like how his books are never the same. The story of the Nickel boys was really drenched with this impending sadness throughout. Just leaves you with the despair of knowing what horrible injustices happen in a supposedly civilized world.

Although I have a feeling the deeper meanings were lost on me, I am happy to have read it. Surprised by its actually surprising twists and turns and his ability to create incredible suspense without needing much action. The initially seemingly lazy and disillusioned detective turns in to a very special kind of hero.

An incredibly engaging read. I was left wanting more all the time. I do feel that a lot of meaning may have been lost on me, and I am not quite sure I understood the ending.

I really enjoyed the story with all its wild twists and turns. I admired how pain and freedom where incorporated throughout.

Well that was a quick and entertaining read. Pretty evident, why this must have been exciting to bring on to the screen.
Looking forward to indulging in the TV series.

While I enjoyed being told stories of greek mythology as a kid, I always found reading them, especially as an adult, a bit dense and boring.
While I am sure purists might take issue with some of it, I, in my ignorance, really enjoyed this engaging read that connected so many dots I was previously unaware of.

Read this with a book club last month. Found it to be such a subtle and persuasive explanation through a set of diverse characters as to why it still matters and remains important to continue the discourse about slavery and how injustice has been woven in to society over time.

Devoured this last summer. A pleasure to indulge in this new voice and characters that finally felt different.
By far my favorite of her two.

I didn‘t love the format of the first few chapters, but once it got to some of her articles and speeches was really drawn in.
She introduced me to and convinced me about intersectionality.

Really enjoyed this, although I tend to love Fiction. Her incredible story definitely reads like a novel...
I was in awe of her eloquence despite everything.

Every now and again it's a pleasure to pick up an easy read and just enjoy looking forward to turn the pages. The blurb on the cover is a perfect summary. You spend your time wishing for all versions to work out. Or...a version you'd like to create yourself!

I judged this book by its cover, as I so often do. I fall in love with cover art, heightening my expectations in seconds. I really don't think I understand the big deal. I was mostly bored, perplexed and oblivious to its alleged brilliance.

Probably the strangest book I have read in a while. Not at all what I expected and initially debated whether to bail on it or not. Some unidentified pull kept me going. Unusual, no doubt. Really filled with a lot of thought-provoking elements, but couldn't really connect with the characters.
