This is a #blameitonlitsy find, as Id never heard of JVN, and...

She is ADORABLE!! Ironic the core question at the heart of this memoir is, would you still love me if you knew all my parts? I have no idea, Jackie, who are you?!? Mystery solved - love, squish, whole 9 yards!

Christina Lauren - always a go-to fave.

Minor complaint with chapter organization and screenplay diversions (the switch from Part I to II is super abrupt, but CL knows your listening intently so hang in there!). Still cute, still captivating, but with minor reservations.

Maleficent!!! ♥️

Another tale as old as time told in cookie-cutter form. I couldn‘t help but miss Black‘s trademark creative force. Her imagination of Perceforest was delightful, but she could‘ve added so much to the creatures living within! I devoured every word about Maleficent and sped-read through the Aurora‘s bits as I found her too transparent to have real personality. I came for the Moors. That‘s where the heart of this novel lived.

Tough times at work? Pick this one up! I wanted so much more from the world-building, but the neat and tidy plot lines made for easy reading with no thought required.

It‘s cute, if not a little too young, but ultimately, this could‘ve used a better understanding of the value of mystery! Keep them guessing!

Much like this blurry picture, it‘s kind of a shame too, because there was a lot going on here, all of it intriguing! By the end of the book, I can only remember bits and bobs none of which I could spin into a basic book summary. I do plan to continue with the series, but with hesitation.

That unfortunate situation where this was both an incredible and terrible read all at the same time. Beautifully designed, I felt like the author‘s pen was a little to heavy - mastering large story scapes but without those pesky narrative explanations vital to building fragmented thoughts into memorable plot lines.

“You‘re life is like a stockpot, simmering with all these minutes: everything you‘ve ever learned and everything you‘ve ever loved.”

These are recipes of grief & mourning. Low faff eats stirred over a stove to remind yourself you can indeed survive. It‘s ironic that at the heart of this aching sadness is the staff of life, the baking of the bread needed to feed life. The fueling of bolognese energy. The bubbling tears of the soup pot.

MellieAntoinette We can handle so much more than we think. The legacy of grief in a cookbook of the heart. Beautifully written, gorgeously illustrated and heartbreakingly delicious. 1mo

I love that Christie rewrote ch12. The original would have resulted in confusion just when we need pristine presence of mind. It isn‘t easy to both unravel a string and leave its components completely intact, but that is the job of the detective as much as it is the goal of a good narrator. Superbe!

DAG never ceases to amaze me. Writing blessed with succinct simplicity that becomes absolument clear...as soon as Poirot explains it to us.

I think that‘s why Poirot holds a special place in the Mystery cannon. The cheekiest of narrators who may actually be smarter than a 5th grader! The cleverest of characters reigning supreme only when the reader is ready for elucidation and information.

On the one hand, this was everything I wanted in a Cressworth adventure. ♥️ 🌹 Hence, the 4 🌟s. But...

I totally understand the criticisms. The two biggest:

1. The title, while eyecatching, doesn‘t fit the story. Houdini plays a bit part that is both noticeably fictionalized and almost out of character for this particular tale. To be fair, this is a pet peeve of mine - if the title doesn‘t fit the story, it feels rigged. ⬇️⬇️⬇️

MellieAntoinette 2. Thomas was also relegated to a cameo, featuring only long enough to remind us of the couple we all desperate to catch up with. I hope this doesn‘t continue cause it kind of made me dislike Audrey Rose. 🥀 2mo

Boy! Imagine that conversation:
Me: Hey, I‘m going out of town for a week. Would you mind watching my pets for me?

You: Sure! Just leave me instructions.

Me: Remove 1 cup of the starter, add 1 cup flour and 3/4 cup + 2T water. Stir and let sit 4-5hrs at room or until bubbly. If it doesn‘t bubble, put it in the oven w the light on til it does.

You: What the hell kinda pet is this?

Me: My sourdough starter!

You: No!

Daisey My starter can easily go a couple weeks and be fine. Yet, I have also had similar conversations to this when I‘ve tried to explain sourdough. 2mo
