1. Really almost any Heyer. ❤️
2. Bare feet!
3. 10,000ish feet? I wasn‘t counting exactly. But I lived at 8,000 ft for four years, and did some hiking.
EDIT: I just googled. 12,600 feet is as high as the cable cars go up Mt. Blanc. So there ya go.
4. Turkey. Eww.
5. I‘m hoping to talk my husband into being Ron Swanson, and then I want to go as Leslie Knope!!
#friyayintro

Sace Heyer truly is a gem! 9h
LauraJ What man wouldn‘t want to be Ron Swanson?! 9h
slategreyskies I‘ve never heard of Heyer. What book do you recommend as a good starting point or intro to her writing? 9h

Little sister is having her piano lesson. I‘m trying to read my book, but big sister is done with her own book, and is bored. So she‘s alternating between handstands/asking me the square root of 96,462/trying to steal my reading glasses/asking me how to say mom in Italian. 🤷🏼‍♀️

I LOVED The Bridge to Terabithia in 4th grade. It makes me so happy that my 4th grader loves it too!

She‘s read it a couple of times in the last few months, and then Friday afternoon the girls spent several hours in the backyard making their own “bridge to Terabithia”! They dragged some broken pavers over under the bushes. And partially dismantled the old playhouse and put the wood to use. ❤️ #raisingreaders

I‘m officially postponing DARK AGE for now. I took a break from the audio, thinking maybe a print version would feel less anxiety-inducing, but NOPE. I am just not in the right place for this book right now. 😰

So, what else from my #librarystack should I read?? I‘m thinking the Vanderbeekers might be next, because they‘re probably my least stressful option, right?

#litsyloveslibraries #libraryhaul

Sace I wouldn't do The Nickel Boys. I loved it but it is an emotionally tough read. 7d
Owlizabeth Evvie Drake is pretty cute and low-key! 7d

I didn‘t do a new #friyayintro bc I was feeling uninspired. But look how creative I used to be when I was jesshowbooks! Haha. A handful of people tagged me in this oldie today, and I kinda love it, so I‘m doing it!

2. Parks & Rec

4. Homemade calzones tomorrow! 😍

Pickpick

The girls and I finished RETURN TO GONE-AWAY this afternoon — it‘s the sequel to GONE-AWAY LAKE, a delightful middle grade novel about a pair of cousins — Portia is 11 and Julian is 12 — who find a row of derelict summer cottages on the shore of a dried-up lake. I adored any book by Elizabeth Enright as a kid, and I‘m so happy that my girls, who are 9 and almost 6, loved these two. #kidlit #raisingreaders #howjessreadsin2019

It‘s a beautiful, but hot day here (90ish). So this morning we went up Mt. Lemmon. Only 58 at the top!! Noel + kids rode the ski lift for fun. I (scared of heights) sat and read at the bottom of the ski lift. Win win. 😬

AlaMich I wanted to get one of those composition book covers for my galaxy tablet, but they didn‘t make that design for my model. 2w

So sad, but fascinating. I was a sophomore when Columbine happened. I had no idea how many misconceptions I‘d absorbed about the whole thing.

It‘s crazy how I‘ve believed incorrectly for 20 years, based on how things were reported in the immediate aftermath. #howjessreadsin2019

Prairiegirl_reading I totally agree. I was telling my husband about the things I thought were true that this book claims are not. Fascinating but deeply disturbing and it made me really mad too. For a lot of reasons. 3w
Megabooks Such an important book. It nearly broke Cullen to write it, as he says in Parkland. But the activism of the Parkland kids helped rebuild him, which I think is amazing! 3w
howjessreads Yes! Totally frustrating @Prairiegirl_reading ! And I definitely want to read Parkland now @Megabooks. 3w
Prairiegirl_reading @Megabooks I can‘t imagine how it would effect someone to be so submerged in this research for such a long time. Just reading the murderer‘s journals would be traumatic. It‘s was deeply disturbing just to read never mind do all the research and then write this. I‘ve got Parkland on my tbr shelf. I‘ll have to get to it soon. 3w

Saturday I took my big kid to Subway (her favorite) for lunch. As we were heading out the door she asked, “Can we each bring a book and have a reading date while we eat?” 😍😍

I read BE THE GIRL by K.A. Tucker, which is a thoughtful YA novel with themes of bullying, autism, and belonging. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ She read TALES FROM THE HOOD, the sixth entry in the Sisters Grimm series by Michael Buckley.

I‘m calling it at 26 titles for August!

The 6️⃣ in the top row were my favorites. The best of the month is tagged.

Only 5️⃣ were nonfiction, because I went on a pretty heavy romance binge in the middle of the month. My favorite romances were WAIT FOR IT and KULTI, both by Mariana Zapata.

9️⃣ were by authors of color. So I‘m doing pretty well on that goal this month!

How about you? How was your August? #howjessreadsin2019

This is probably a 3.5 star for me. I loved the way Ivan and Jasmine were unafraid to give each other crap. I didn‘t like how Jasmine hid a situation that was actually a big deal, and then totally freaked out about something that shouldn‘t have been a big deal. It was annoying. But their developing friendship/romance was super sweet.

I have been in a very romantic mood this month (maybe because tmrw is my 13th anniversary?). I‘ve found a couple new authors that I‘ve enjoyed — Susannah Nix, Alexa Martin, and Helena Hunting. I‘d say Susannah Nix‘s are my favorite style — funny, smart, and not too earnest. This book is crazy. I didn‘t realize that Jones was instrumental in integrating Indianapolis, partly as a result of the death of his daughter. The Joneses had adopted some Korean kids, and some African American ones. One Korean daughter died in a car accident, and she wasn‘t allowed to be buried in a regular cemetery bc of her race — it was against Indiana law. She had to be buried in a “Negro cemetery”. This was in the late 1950s. 😱😑
