A book by Sylvain Tesson is always an adventure. But here, the adventure of retracing the steps of Napoleon's retreat from Moscow to Paris in sidecars in December is fast eclipsed by History itself.

In less than 200 pages, Sylvain Tesson really offers a feel of the horrors, hunger, and sufferings experienced by the soldiers of the Grande Armée. (See comments to read more)

Adventures-of-a-French-Reader As someone who had very little knowledge about this period in history, I feel this book is a great introduction. The bits about the road trip offer some humorous moments that I greatly appreciated. I quite enjoyed this journey with Tesson's friends. It was great to read their adventures without actually feeling the cold, being comfortable in my reading nook with a hot drink ;) 2y

A great wintery book of travel that will take me away from this unbearable world we live in.

Five friends on Ural motorcycles (some with sidecars!) decide you retrace Napoleon‘s 2,500 mile retreat. It‘s a history travelogue reflecting on history, adventure, and friendship. Lots of great lines in this book. One of my favorites: “That night, I felt I was falling asleep in the middle of History‘s spiderweb.”
