Good but a slow opening to get me interested, about 100 pages in I started to enjoy this book.

From child prostitute to Parisian painter, Pan Yuliang's journey is gracefully told in this fictionalized account of the real artist's life. My favorite part of this book was seeing Yuliang become herself and learn to give and receive love after immense trauma. The relationships in this book are complex, beautiful, and sweet. This book is a lovely celebration of a female artist from the post impressionist era, where there are so few.
The Painter from Shanghai is the fictionalized account of Pan Yuliang's life. Pan Yuliang was a largely unknown postimpressionist painter who made her way from the brothels of Shanghai to paint in Paris.
I'm always excited to learn about a piece of hidden history and I'm finding this book to be gracefully written and interesting. It reminds me of Memoirs of a Geisha.
In keeping with the subject, I call this "Still Life with Book." ?
Saturday morning reading, one of the best parts of my week.
