Puts me in mind of Lee K Abbot and Terry Bisson and George Saunders and Donald Barthelme. And maybe some of the absurdity of Jack Pendarvis and Christopher Moore, too. And just written pitch-perfect, almost like Krusoe's bored with being so good. Maybe "casually brilliant" is the better way to say that. And just plain old irreverent and fun. Don't know why I haven't read more from him. Don't know why I'm just now reading this, so long after 1997.
