So Long Been Dreaming: Postcolonial Science Fiction & Fantasy
So Long Been Dreaming: Postcolonial Science Fiction & Fantasy | Nalo Hopkinson
4 posts | 5 read | 3 to read
So Long Been Dreaming: Postcolonial Science Fiction & Fantasy is an anthology of original new stories by leading African, Asian, South Asian, and Aboriginal authors, as well as North American and British writers of colour. Stories of imagined futures abound in Western writing. Writer and editor Nalo Hopkinson notes that the science fiction/fantasy genre ''speaks so much about the experience of being alienated, but contains so little writing by alienated people themselves.'' It's an oversight that Hopkinson and Mehan aim to correct with this anthology. The wealth of postcolonial literature has included many who have written insightfully about their pasts and presents. With So Long Been Dreaming they creatively address their futures. With an introduction by Hugo and Nebula Award-winner Samuel R. Delany. Contributors to So Long Been Dreaming are Opal Palmer Adisa, Celu Amberstone, Ven Begamudre, Tobias S. Buckell, Wayde Compton, Andrea Hairston, Maya Khankhoje, Tamai Kobayashi, Larissa Lai, Karin Lowachee, devorah major, Suzette Mayr, Carole McDonnell, Nnedi Okorafor-Mbachu, Eden Robinson, Nisi Shawl, Vandana Singh, Sheree R. Thomas, and Greg van Eekhout.

Multitasking: stitching while attending an online author event. Also, Nalo Hopkinson read from a forthcoming SF story & the exciting passage she chose described a solo pilot‘s experience with a plane going down (and how to save herself and her talking pig). I‘m currently in the midst of Shipstead‘s Great Circle; earlier today I read about the MC learning to stunt fly. Serendipity!

I‘ve been making an effort to read more authors of color, so I was very excited to find an anthology in one of my favorite genres. It‘s reminded me that the short story isn‘t my favorite format, but I have really loved getting to hear so many different voices. Highly recommend!

Pickpick

These stories were so good!! There were, as always, some stories that I liked more than others, but overall the collection was amazing. I'll be picking up more work by a lot of these authors.

I stumbled across this one on a listopia on Goodreads and I decided I had to #dropeverythingandread it - well, almost everything, we are in the last push before finals so I can't drop my pile of grading. I've only read the first story so far but it was great and I'm hoping I'll find lots of new to me sci-fi writers of color!! #aprilbookshowers
