Where's Evelyn?: The 1953 Babysitter's Kidnapping That Shook the Nation
Where's Evelyn?: The 1953 Babysitter's Kidnapping That Shook the Nation | Susan T Hessel
1 post | 2 read | 2 to read
La Crosse, Wisconsin was an innocent small community in 1953. Equally innocent was bright, young babysitter Evelyn Hartley. But, someone came in and snatched her while she was baby-sitting and she was never seen again. This story still haunts La Crosse sixty years later, with just about everyone holding a theory about what happened to her or a story about how they were affected by her disappearance and presumed murder. There was no CNN, MSNBC, or Fox News then. In fact, La Crosse did not even have its own TV station. Still, the national media descended on the city just like they do today. This book includes crime scene photos and newspaper articles during the time when the issue was still hot.

Such a tragic story of a crime that will never be solved, this was a kindle book and the pictures were somewhat wonky plus there were many spelling errors but it was worth reading. I used the Willow filter for more of a 1950's look

Kaye Thanks for the heads up. This is one I believe I‘ve missed. I like reading about these really cold cases like this. 7y
Kaye Yea we have a few of them in our state from the 1950s. You sure feel sorry for those families that never get answers. Do you have any other books like this ? I‘m always on the lookout for some I haven‘t heard of before. Thanks. 👍🏼 7y
Kaye Yep I‘ve read 3 different ones on that case. It‘s quite intriguing. A colder case than the first one. I think it was around 1920 ? I like Troy Taylor‘s books. He picks lots of quirky topics. 7y
Kaye That‘s sad about your babysitter. There‘s a girl from our town who was a bit younger than me. Our moms were friends so we played together occasionally. She and her boyfriend were murdered the summer she graduated from HS. The police had the guy that did it but couldn‘t get enough evidence to convict him. So he‘s been a free man his entire life. That was 40 years ago. It literally killed her dad and her mom was a walking dead person. 😢 7y
