McGlincy Killings in Campbell, California, The: An 1896 Unsolved Mystery | Tobin Gilman
3 posts | 1 read | 5 to read
On the morning of May 27, 1896, the peaceful township of Campbell awoke to shocking news. Six people were brutally murdered at the home of Colonel Richard P. McGlincy, one of the town's most respected citizens. The suspect, James Dunham--the colonel's son-in-law--fled the scene and disappeared into the hills of Mount Hamilton overlooking Santa Clara County. This heinous crime triggered a massive, nationwide manhunt while investigators pieced together the details. Author Tobin Gilman examines the mind and motives of the killer, the sensational media coverage and the colorful personalities associated with the protracted and unresolved pursuit of justice.

Back in old timey days - there was a lot of fake news too. While searching for the gruesome killer of his own family, Santa Clara County and state officials held plenty of James Dunham doppelgängers in jail while trying to confirm their identities. Rumors of his new life as a Mexican revolutionary or leader of a gang of banditos persisted as everyone sought the $10k reward. Definitely a good historical read of early Silicon Valley history. ??

Love this story about the crazy manhunt for James Dunham who killed his entire family except for his infant son in Campbell, CA. It included a week long scourge of the San Jose foothills, quicksilver mines and involved crazy bounty hunters, colorful sheriffs and various opportunists.

It‘s not every day you get to dig into a grisly murder in your own backyard. An entire family was killed by their son-in-law / husband back in 1896 in Campbell, CA ( south of google and a few miles from Apple). Fascinating! Even Wilson is intrigued.
