#ReadingtheAmericas2023 #Jamaica James‘ debut novel illustrating the extremes of religious fervor in Jamaica in 1957. The good versus evil paradigm significantly shifted here with some obeah and magical realism thrown in. The writing holds up though. It is violent and graphic so it didn‘t go well with my holiday spirit but better to end the year with this than begin a year with it. My first #ReadingtheAmericas2023

BarbaraBB I didn‘t know about his debut novel. It sounds like a tough starter of the challenge! 2y

I wavered between pick and so so for this one. I thought it was well written and thoughtful, I loved the way the apostle‘s speech was written. I can‘t say I ~enjoyed~ reading the most violent and depressing bits at all, but still an important interesting book.

Continued...
But it did so in a confusing way that made me feel like it was perpetuating the incorrect and prejudiced thinking that, Gay men “turn” gay and only can “take care of themselves” through rape.
That being said, I‘m not an English professor so there are many things that went over my head and probably clarified those Also, this book is so much more complex then I have been able to write about, but this was just my initial reaction.

This book should come with a trigger warning. So those who can not handle rape, violence, torture should not read this book.

The Rum Preacher is beaten near to death by a new man of God, Apostle York. In the fight over the souls of Gibbeah, the two men of God battle out what the meaning of God truly

This made me so heart broken as I think it was trying to link the horrors of rape in the church and what it meant to be Gay in the 1940‘s. Tbc

The English language needs a word for those books that leave you mentally reeling, smiling but wide-eyed in disbelief, wondering what the hell just happened and can it really be over. Since I'm no word-smith, I'm just going to go with book-drunk. So I'm book-drunk on John Crow's Devil. #bookdrunk 📚🍷
