Opposite of Innocent | Sonya Sones
5 posts | 7 read | 5 to read
Poignant and chilling by turns, The Opposite of Innocent is award-winning author Sonya Sones's most gripping novel in verse yet. It's the story of a girl named Lily, who's been crushing on a man named Luke, a friend of her parents, ever since she can remember. Luke has been away for two endless years, but he's finally returning today. Lily was only twelve when he left. But now, at fourteen, she feels transformed. She can't wait to see how Luke will react when he sees the new her. And when her mother tells her that Luke will be staying with them for a while, in the bedroom right next to hers, her heart nearly stops.Having Luke back is better than Lily could have ever dreamed. His lingering looks set Lily on fire. Is she just imagining them? But then, when they're alone, he kisses her. Then he kisses her again. Lily's friends think anyone his age who wants to be with a fourteen-year-old must be really messed up. Maybe even dangerous. But Luke would never do anything to hurt her...would he?In this powerful tale of a terrifying leap into young adulthood, readers will accompany Lily on her harrowing journey from hopelessness to hope.

Pickpick

Sonya Sones writes this powerful story using verse, and it's a successful literary tool for expressing Lily's convoluted emotions. This is purely a teen book and it shows Lily's naivete when it comes to love and sex. It's a heartbreaking story as you watch Lily get manipulated by her dad's best friend, Luke, on whom she harbors a crush. He coerces her into sex and rapes her many times while she blames herself. 👇🏼👇🏼

Kaylamburson This is a book with a lesson that teens will easily understand and hopefully help them to identify red flags of inappropriate sexual behavior and how to ask for help. The author's note clarifies any loose-ends and provides important resources. Although it's a dark topic, I think it raises a much-needed conversation and shouldn't be shyed away from by parents because of the mature topic. 5y
TheBookAddict It sounds like a tough read, but one that must be read and shared. 5y
Kaylamburson I definitely think it is. It has a lot of average reviews on Goodreads since people didn't like the end, but I think it ended in a realistic moment and didn't need elaboration since Lily finally had clarity and took the major step that teens and children are afraid to take in this situation. @TheBookAddict 5y

Pickpick

This was between a ‘so-so‘ and a ‘pick‘ for me. I went with a pick only because it touches on really important topics and it‘s written in a way that makes for a quick read that‘s perfect for teen readers struggling with the stamina it takes to get through full pages. I would absolutely recommend this to some of my high schoolers, but I‘m not the perfect reader for this book. Still, super important conversations can be had after reading this book.

Well, would you look at that?! So what I thought was a typo happened again, and inquiring minds had to know🕵🏼‍♀️ if this was some weird word never used in modern English. Alas, friends, Dr. Google tells me that this word that I thought was a misspelling of ‘favorite‘ is a Flippin‘ Green Gem. Whaaaa?? And how does one pronounce that? I‘m only going from the dip that kinda starts the same, so is this “savor it” “savor rite” Headed back to Google.

What has happened here?! 😂😂😆 I‘m cruising along and all the sudden I stumble over this editing mishap. It‘s the equivalent of the tv glitching.

CoverToCoverGirl 😳 Totally cringeworthy! (edited) 6y
