I am reading more Native American authors this year, and was hoping this one would be a good historical novel from a Cherokee POV, and it might be, but I am 70 pages in and have no idea who most of these people are or what is going on. And I am not a prude, love a good smut book but the amount of male masterbation in this is ... excessive. Coupled with the whiplash between that, dying babies, and calling Black people "darkies" over and over ?

Loved the story of this family and the wisdom of the mother/matriarch, Check. I also found the politics of cherokee life interesting as it was told as day to day facts of life rather than to exoticize or tell from an outsider's perspective.

A rare look into a history of a people and place that you will not much read about in mainstream American. A fine story about a family in eastern Oklahoma with a touch of Cherokee sovereignty and Cherokee culture in the mix.

'Cherokee America' is a Western novel in so many ways, and still it's also not a Western novel at all. All the elements of westerns are there, and still its heart is more intimate, it's scrutiny goes deep into human's soul.
It's a great novel.

I'm only 23% in, l didn't realise this is a longer book. But l'm enjoying it. It has a strangly languid rhyrhm but also a mildred but very present sense of forboding.
The characters are fantastic.

Finished Forgotten Murder, now it's time to start Cherokee America. I'll be hosting Margaret Verble on my blog next month. Can't wait. She's such a nice woman.
