The Shadow Queen
The Shadow Queen | Anne O'Brien
2 posts | 3 read | 2 to read
The untold story of Joan of Kent, the mastermind behind the reign of child-King Richard II A tale of treachery, power-hungry families and legal subterfuges. 'What would enhance the pattern of my life further? One word slid into my mind. A seductive word. A dangerous word, perhaps, for a woman. Power.' From her first clandestine marriage Joan of Kent's reputation is one of beauty, scandal and rumour. Her royal blood makes her a desirable bride. Her ambition and passion make her a threat. Joan knows what she has to do to survive. The games to play, the men to marry -- even if one man will always have her heart. A remarkable story of love and loyalty and of the cost of personal ambition. The story of the woman who would ultimately wield power as the mother to 10 year old King Richard II, from the shadows of the throne.

Mehso-so

Not as engaging as The Devil's Consort, the most interesting parts of Joan's life seem to be skipped over for whining about waiting for news. The constant "I am better than everyone else & so clever" despite making constant mistakes & learning nothing got a bit grating after a while, but in fairness that could just be the character profile. It didn't really paint much of a picture for me, the storytelling was a bit lacking. Not the author's best.

Pickpick

I received a review copy of this and loved it! I really enjoy historical fiction, and this was easy to read, and quickly had me caught up in the intrigue and scandal of King Edward the Third's fourteenth century court. Joan was a great strong female protagonist ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
