Nothing on Earth | Conor O'Callaghan

e~It was a time when nobody called. Early evening, the hottest August in living memory.e(tm) A frightened girl bangs on a door. A man answers. From the moment he invites her in, his world will never be the same again. She tells him about her family, and their strange life in the show home of an abandoned housing estate. The long, blistering days spent sunbathing; the airless nights filled with inexplicable noises; the words that appear on the windows, written in dust. Where is her family now? Is she telling the truth? Can the man be trusted? Beautiful and disturbing, her story e" retold in his words e" reaches towards those frayed edges of reality where each of us, if only once, glimpses something nobody will ever explain.

To be honest, I'm not sure how I feel after this even though I finished it on a single day.

SPOILERS
I feel like Helen & Martina grew up on the land that was later rezoned for this housing estate. And that maybe the land reclaimed them. Or that it's an allegory of the effect of Capitalism, Church & Colonialism on ordinary people. Or maybe it was written without an explanation in mind - and that wrecks my quite literal mind!

May need to reread.

Wow.This only took me 5hours to read (and that includes a 2hour break to make and eat my dinner). This book is mindblowingly good, the imagery, the sense of fear and unknown and the ever pervasive thread of something disturbing just flows out of every page of this book. All of the stars⭐⭐️️⭐️⭐️⭐️

AnnaDesourdy I can't find this book at my library or on Amazon. Has it not yet been released? 8y
Ais It has been released (19 May), however it's an Irish author and published by an Irish company so maybe that's why you can't get it?Kennys.ie is a bookshop in Ire that has free international shipping if you did want to buy it:) 8y
