Ojiichan's Gift
Ojiichan's Gift | Chieri Uegaki
2 posts | 3 read | 1 to read
A heartwarming story about the relationship between a girl and her grandfather. When Mayumi was born, her grandfather built her a garden. It had no flowers or vegetables in it. Instead, Ojiichan made it out of stones: Òbig ones, little ones and ones in-between.Ó Every summer, Mayumi visits her grandfather in Japan, and they tend the garden together. Raking the gravel is her favorite part. But then one summer, everything changes. Ojiichan has grown too old to care for his home and the garden. He has to move. Can Mayumi find a way to keep the memory of their garden alive? Children will be moved by MayumiÕs devotion and ingenuity.

I've actually had Ojiichan's Gift by Chieri Uegaki (illustrated by Genevieve Simms) on hold at the local library since January when they preordered it. It was so worth the wait. This story of a girl's relationship with her grandfather and the love they share for their garden is so absolutely precious. Genuinely teared up reading this one. Definitely recommended.

BarbaraTheBibliophage Litsy is just killing me. Last week it was a book using my grandma name (which is Japanese). (I ordered it of course.) Now you‘ve got one with the formal version of Mr. B‘s grandpa name. I might order it also, based on your review! 5y

Touching story with some beautiful artwork. Called me back to my own childhood. Read with my cubs and we all enjoyed it.
