Crime at Black Dudley
Crime at Black Dudley | Margery Allingham
Classic Crime from the Golden Age, the first in the Albert Campion Series. Margery Allingham is J.K. Rowling's favourite Golden Age author.George Abbershaw is set for a social weekend at Black Dudley manor, hosted by Wyatt Petrie and his elderly uncle Colonel Combe, who enjoys the company of Bright Young Things. With Meggie Oliphant in attendance, George looks forward to the chance of getting closer to the girl he's set his heart on. But when murder spoils the party, the group soon find out that not only is there a killer in their midst, but the house is under the control of notorious criminals. Trapped and at their mercy, George must find a way to thwart their diabolical plans while getting himself and Meggie out alive.Luckily for Abbershaw, among the guests is Albert Campion - a garrulous and affable party-crasher with a great knack for solving mysteries and interrogating suspects. The Crime at Black Dudley, first published in 1929, is the first novel to introduce Margery Allingham's amiable and much loved sleuth - Albert Campion.

Another book finished for #Scarathlon2022! This is the first book of the Campion series and is not as good as some of the later ones, but it's still an enjoyable English country-house mystery. It surprised me that Campion is not the main character in this novel.

Sadly, I didn‘t get quite as much reading done this past weekend as I hoped, but I did manage to finish this little one. Overall not bad, some humor and ludicrous situations, but I found it odd that the amateur detective wasn‘t the one who followed the mystery until the end. That task was actually done by someone else. 🤨 Despite this fact, I‘m going to go ahead and try the next book in the series.

This was my first read of the #roll100 challenge and was my first Margery Allingham mystery. Written in 1929 and set at an old country estate in England, this was right up my alley. Allingham had a sense of humor that was evident in this first installment of her Albert Campion series and I will definitely continue reading her work. Although I already have a long list of beloved mystery authors, I am always happy to discover more.

PuddleJumper Sounds like a great first read! 2y
BiblioLitten I was deciding between different books for this author. This post makes it easier 🙂 2y
Ncostell @BiblioLitten Glad to be of assistance! I don‘t always start mystery series from the beginning especially if there are a ton but I do like to start with the first when I can. I just happened to download this one awhile ago and was pleased to find that it is the first in the series. 2y

Don't know why I didn't start this book earlier, but I really regret it. Such a great classic crime. It's so sad that great detective stories aren't popular at the moment, because I would have known her earlier than.
The action takes place in an old house. Several people are there for a party and one is murdered. 😉 The main question, who is the murderer? The answer was not what I expected but still understandable 😊 Better than modern books for me.

Having a little break from all the work for my best friend's wedding part two.

I needed a German book now, because concentration isn't the best these days. So it fits perfectly, that the tagged one is on my list for #litsyclassics.

Quite bonkers, but in that delicious 20s kind of way. I'm not surprised Allingham was encouraged to follow Campion for her further novels; he's easily the most entertaining of the bunch. Also a few gothic-style twists in this one. Black Dudley sounds like one hell of a house.

Rating: 3.5 stars I'm not quite sure how I feel about this book. It seems very dated, to the point of being ridiculous, yet it was very fast-paced and I really liked the quirkiness of Albert Campion (who was not the protagonist in this story). I liked it enough to continue reading the series.

Going a little old school this Saturday night with an English country house golden age mystery, first published in 1929. This is the first time I've read Margery Allingham. So far, it's pretty good!
