Read for #ChloeGongReadAlong & my 3rd Jan #Roll100 book (#96 Any Retelling & this one‘s a remix of Shakespeare‘s Antony and Cleopatra.)

Chloe Gong books are a rollercoaster🎢-thrills, twists, turns & deep dives into the unknown. Do I know what the hell is going on in this book or what‘s going to be revealed in the third book? Absolutely not! Do I care? Absolutely not! I just go where Chloe tells me too.

I did not do a good job rereading this one at 2 chapters a day with the #JaneAustenThenAndNow group. I set out with one of my print copies (pictured) & ended up finishing it on my Kindle in 4 or 5 sessions. Here are my answers to the discussion questions:

1. Reread, maybe 10 times. As mentioned, I read from both my print edition & my Kindle.
2. Colonel Brandon, always & of course pictured in my head as Alan Rickman.⬇️

DebinHawaii 3. OK, it comes from the Ang Lee movie rather than the book, but Elinor when she finds out Edwin isn‘t married. The emotion! Emma Thompson wrote it so well-it‘s better than the book, although reading it I see it the scene in my head.
4. “Mine is a misery which nothing can do away.” Oh, Marianne, so dramatic always but it‘s been a shitty month & I keep saying this to myself. ⬇️

DebinHawaii 5. Yeah, it‘s always a hard no on carrying around hair or wearing hair jewelry.🤢
6. A secret love I think.🤷🏻‍♀️
7. Elinor, always
8. Invites: Colonel Brandon, Elinor & Margaret-I feel that she has the tea without the annoyance of Mrs. Jennings. No invite? The Steele sisters… 👯‍♀️
9. It‘s my 3rd favorite of the 5 main books after P&P & Persuasion & always inspires me to watch the 1995 movie another 2 or 3 times.

I did better with the lit part of #FoodAndLit #Netherlands as I ran out of time to cook anything. The imported food section of my grocery store did have this peppermint licorice candy which I‘ll review below. Making this post while taking an errand break of this #SaturdayChatterday for coffee, breakfast & some #LitsyLove correspondence.

About the book: I‘ve long been an admirer of Audrey Hepburn & that increased with ⬇️

DebinHawaii …this well-told story of her childhood in the Netherlands & what her family went through during WWII. It was a unique perspective & engrossing, explaining a lot about how that horrible experience shaped Audrey. The author did a lot of research & interviews & it made for a compelling read. This is the third book I read in January that dealt with Nazis & other fascists & I think I need to hold off on the subject the next month or two! 😵‍💫⬇️ (edited) 12h
DebinHawaii It‘s just too close to home right now! 😳Pairing it with food is a little difficult since the lack of food for Audrey & her family in 1945 led to malnutrition & life-long issues for the actress. The licorice ice I bought is called schoolkrijt or krijtjes & wasn‘t invented until the 1960s. I‘m not a big licorice fan but the peppermint softens the taste. Overall, not bad. I bought cheese too & will try to share it later on. (edited) 12h

I got behind in posting reviews for January so, I‘ll try to get them all in today.

From the #AuldLangSpine list of @JacqMac this book kind of wrecked me. I wasn‘t planning on reading it this month but my library e-book hold came in & so it jumped the line. I think my mistake was reading it the weekend before the inauguration & the dystopian story of the effects of totalitarianism & civil war on a family in Ireland, ⬇️

DebinHawaii …was too real & quite frankly depressed the hell out of me & I can‘t stop thinking about it. It‘s chilling, frustrating to read & very good—winning the 2023 Booker Prize. I‘m not sorry I read it, just the timing with the reality of our current political shitshow just messed me up. I‘m vacillating between 4 & 5 stars- the style with no paragraphs, quotation marks, etc. drove me a little crazy as did the MC, Eilish & some of her choices, but ⬇️ 17h
DebinHawaii those things also added to the utter chaos of the events in the book. Still unpacking it, probably will be for a while. This is my third book from @JacqMac ‘s list so far & all have been amazing in their own ways. 🖤🖤🖤 17h
monalyisha OOF, I totally get it. I felt much the same way about the tagged (from my match‘s list this January). 16h

DebinHawaii @monalyisha Oh that one looks good too, but maybe in a lighter month! Again, great matchmaking. Thank you! 15h
JacqMac I get it. This was such a dark read. It felt so much like it could really happen, it made it scary. And now here we are. Watching America… 15h

Finished this yesterday and have been trying to process my feelings about it since. It tackles some deep subjects with a levity that makes the book seem trite at times, but there are some dark themes running through the story so it needs some humour to lighten it. On the whole, I enjoyed it, and felt invested in the friendship between the two MCs, especially towards the end.

12/100 Its been a long time since I read this, back in high school, but I'd forgotten how sad this book is, how melancholy the whole world was, even in the lighter moments. Sometimes Bradbury leans too much into the poetic for my tastes, but his vision of a Mars that will never be, definitely stays with the reader when its finished. 3 ⭐⭐⭐💫 #ClassicLSFBC #Jumpstart2025 #Read2025

Published in 2008, the info is so outdated that there is no mention of iPhones. However, it was interesting to skim through as a hindsight read.
