Ten-year-old Ava is not altogether sure that she is going to like life at her new home with her mum and her mum's new husband, Mr Everitt. The butler, Jiggins, seems to be permanently cross, and her stepfather rarely smiles. But there are bright spots: the stable lad, Tom, is friendly, and Connie, the cook, is a warm-hearted source of comfort.
