And for eighteen years, Emmaline Watkins has feared that her future held just that: nothing. But when the head of the most admired fashion house in the country opens her prestigious design competition to girls from outside the stylish capital city, Emmy's dreams seem closer than they ever have before. As the first "country girl" to compete, Emmy knows she'll encounter extra hurdles on her way to the top. But as she navigates the twisted world of high fashion, she starts to wonder: Will she be able to tailor herself to fit into this dark, corrupted race? And at what cost?

Pickpick

Going through the last of my Edelweiss approvals. (How I‘m going to miss that site!)

I loved this book. It‘s Project Runway in teen novel form. There‘s even a Tim Gunn like mentor character. The villain was worthy of Miranda Priestley and made me long for the upcoming musical of The Devil Wears Prada.

The central characters were likeable, but still flawed and the plot surprised me a couple times — always a plus. (More below.)

bookseller_cate While I dress less than fashionably, I do love watching fashion and this book did well in describing the various designs of the competing characters, not an easy feat. (edited) 5y
bookseller_cate My one criticism is that having now read it, the title makes little sense to me. Is it a reference I‘m not getting? 5y
