Poirot Investigates
Poirot Investigates: Hercule Poirot Investigates | Agatha Christie
117 posts | 124 read | 4 reading | 35 to read
First there was the mystery of the film star and the diamond . . . then came the 'suicide' that was murder . . . the mystery of the absurdly chaep flat . . . a suspicious death in a locked gun-room . . . a million dollar bond robbery . . . the curse of a pharoah's tomb . . . a jewel robbery by the sea . . . the abduction of a Prime Minister . . . the disappearance of a banker . . . a phone call from a dying man . . . and, finally, the mystery of the missing will. What links these fascinating cases? Only the brilliant deductive powers of Hercule Poirot!

Low pick. I don‘t usually like short stories or short story collections but I actually quite enjoyed my time with these. Poirot is back along with his little grey cells to solve seemingly impossible puzzles. Could still do without Hastings, but he was tolerable in smaller bites. No real standout favorites from this collection but I had a good cozy time reading it. #ChristiesCapers @Librarybelle

Another lackluster library edition. Overall, I liked this one. Poirot and his little gray cells were hard at work. Usually I am not a fan of short stories but in this case I liked the short stories better than some of Christie‘s books. Her mysteries can get really convoluted but in this format there wasn‘t too much time to get too crazy. My favorite mystery was the first story, The Adventures of the Western Star.

Here‘s my review for this book I just finished for the #christiescapers buddy read. I‘m looking forward to reading the next story. I have the audiobook for the next story in my Audible library but I‘m disappointed that Richard Armitage won‘t be narrating the next one. I like listening to him read the stories. He hasn‘t read all of the stories but he‘s read most of them so far.

POIROT INVESTIGATES (1924) is a collection of short stories featuring Agatha Christie‘s iconic detective, Hercule Poirot, and his loyal companion, Captain Hastings. As one of Christie‘s earlier works, it offers a glimpse into the development of her famous sleuth and showcases her talent for crafting clever, compact mysteries, making it perfect for readers who enjoy quick, satisfying detective stories. ⬇️

dabbe Captain Hastings‘ narration adds charm and occasional humor, as his more conventional thinking contrasts with Poirot‘s genius. His bafflement often mirrors the reader‘s own, making the reveals all the more satisfying. Possible Trigger: Reflecting the era in which they were written, some stories contain cultural attitudes and language that may feel outdated or insensitive to modern readers. 4d
Librarybelle I cringed especially through one of the stories and the outdated speech. Good review! 4d

It‘s time to discuss Poirot Investigates for #ChristiesCapers ! I have 5 questions posted as spoilers. They can be found by searching the book‘s feed, my feed, or the group‘s hashtags.

5. Consider this a free-for-all post! What are some elements you read that you wish to discuss with the group? #ChristiesCapers #AgathaChristieClubR3

dabbe Some elements of detective fiction I enjoyed: Poirot enjoys a dramatic final reveal, gathering suspects to expose the culprit. They're fun, but they literally come out of the blue. Some of these mysteries almost had the “locked-room“ puzzle elements, where the crime seems impossible at first glance and perhaps quite far-fetched. And, like Sherlock, Poirot occasionally lets a culprit escape punishment if their crime was morally justified. 4d
willaful I was a little irked by the character who was acquitted and couldn't be tried twice when he'd been arrested but had never gone to trial at all. I suppose the laws could be different wherever they were, but I think she made this same error in The Mysterious Affair at Styles. 4d
suvata @willaful I think you hit the nail on the head. It would be so awesome if some author would take up these cases and show the legal side of the trials after the arrests. I like legal thrillers too. (edited) 4d
willaful @suvata That would be interesting! 4d

4. Themes. The only overarching theme is Poirot himself. But, what are some thematic elements you found within these shorts?

For instance, spiritualism is mentioned and will play a role in later novels in a variety of forms, from the supernatural and witchcraft to seances and hauntings.

I think there was a mention too regarding Poirot's penchant for only helping the rich??? #ChristiesCapers #AgathaChristieClubR3

dabbe Like Doyle in some of his stories, Christie plays on the early 20th-century fascination with foreign settings (Egypt, jewels from the East, mysterious foreigners). Also like Doyle, some portrayals reflect stereotypes of the time and show racist and biased viewpoints--even with racially-charged ethnic words (e.g., Middle Eastern or Asian characters depicted as exotic or untrustworthy; the use of the word “chink“ ...). 4d
suvata I agree that spiritualism pops up quite a bit in her stories. It must‘ve been quite a fad in the 1920s. Also, a lot of her stories take place in a closed room situation. The ethnic bias is so obvious that I don‘t think these stories would be published in today‘s world without massive revisions. It‘s kind of sad because it‘s good to know how past generations thought of others. I have to remind myself that it was a much smaller world back then. 4d
willaful I guess it was natural enough at the time, when English people traveled so much, but I think it's interesting that Christie started out writing the “exotic locale“ stories and then her second husband was an archeologist who gave her a lot of fodder for future books. 4d
RainyDayReading I agree with everyone above. It‘s interesting how her stories reflect the ideas and attitudes of the time regarding “exotic” locations. Plus the attitudes and ideas regarding people from different cultures that would definitely not fly today but considering how often it appears in her stories I‘m guessing was fairly common for the time. 3h

3. Good old Hastings! We experience the Poirot stories through Hastings's voice, and I could not but help think yet again about Watson and Holmes. Hasting shows parts admiration, frustration, anger, and kind of jealousy over Poirot and his methods.

We've talked about Hastings in the past...has your opinion of Hastings changed? What are your impressions of Hastings's character as seen in these shorts? #ChristiesCapers #AgathaChristieClubR3

dabbe I'd say that these early stories by Christie were an homage to Doyle's SH and Watson. I find Hastings even funnier than Watson, though, and I love his dissing of Poirot--especially when Poirot makes him feel like a moron, something Holmes was also good at with Watson. Hastings' inserted opinions just crack me up! And I now know that he never met an auburn-haired girl he didn't like. Wonder if he likes titian? He needs to meet Nancy Drew. 🤣 4d
suvata There is definitely a huge resemblance between Sherlock and Watson. Hastings' feelings are a blend of hero-worship, mild frustration, and genuine fondness, rooted in years of shared adventures and mutual trust. I don‘t think I appreciated Hastings in the first few stories as much as I did in this collection. Maybe it took a couple books for him to grow on me. (edited) 4d
kspenmoll I too enjoy when he disses on Poirot- & he is a sucker for beautiful ladies! 3d
RainyDayReading Didn‘t like him in the previous stories, still don‘t like him now 🤣 I think because even though he has spent, supposedly, a lot of time with Poirot, he still hasn‘t shown any growth in his deductive abilities. His constant leaping to conclusions without backing them up really annoys me. 3h

2. Think about the short stories in this collection. Any standouts? Favorites? Disappointments? We'll talk about Hastings next! #ChristiesCapers #AgathaChristieClubR3

MariaW I don‘t like the Davenheim and Cheap Flat stories that much because they seem very far-fetched to me. I liked the Million Dollar Bond Robbery and Kidnapped Prime Minister, they were just more exciting. 5d
willaful @MariaW I think I'm kind of the opposite, I prefer the more domestic stories to the world affairs ones. 4d
dabbe These stories all ran together in my head. The only thing that stood out for me was in pretty much every one of these, the ending came out of left field, making it impossible for the reader to even have a chance of solving the mystery. We don't stand a chance next to those “little gray cells“ of M. Poirot! 🤣 4d
See All 9 Comments
willaful @dabbe yes, she didn't really bother to try to be fair to the reader in the shorts. The novels are more satisfying that way -- you can't guess, but you feel like maybe you could! 😂 4d
suvata They were all very good, but I did have a few favorites that I mentioned in the first question. Christie is unique in that. I usually don‘t like short stories because they don‘t seem to have an ending that kind of wraps everything up but that‘s not true of Christie. They read like a full novel. They‘re like “bite-size Poirot“. 4d
Sace I liked the The Million Dollar Bond Robbery, but honestly none really stood out. The bond robbery is really the only one I can remember the details. 4d
willaful @Sace It held my attention more than most, though I was struck by how lucky it was that the maid left the room exactly twice! A lot of her plots rely on chance. 4d
kspenmoll I liked The Case of the Missing Will & The Million Dollar Bond Robbery 3d
RainyDayReading Even though I finished this a few days ago, I don‘t really remember any of the stories 😅 Weirdly I feel like I‘ve read the story regarding Egypt and the curse before but for the life of me I can‘t think of where I would‘ve read it from. The one involving the cheap flat kinda lost me a bit…and I remember liking the one with the pearl necklace…aside from that they didn‘t really stick. 3h

1. Welcome to our first short story collection by Christie! This first collection includes stories featuring Poirot, making this the 3rd Poirot book we've read.

Which do you prefer...the short stories or the novels (thinking specifically about the two other Poirot novels we have read so far)? #ChristiesCapers #AgathaChristieClubR3

Deblovestoread Definitely the novels. Short stories rarely work for me although these were ok. 5d
MariaW I prefer the novels as well, even though the short stories have been an easy read inbetween. I‘m always wondering how those short stories keep on being adapted into one and half hour long episodes for TV series. 🤔 5d
willaful I also prefer the novels. I dunno, I've read this several times before but it seems like no matter how many times I try, my eyes just glaze over and I don't absorb anything that's happening for most of them. 🤣 4d
See All 8 Comments
dabbe For me, it depends on how good the story is, whether it be a novel or short story. These stories were in the average range, IMHO, so I definitely would prefer a novel to these selections. But then, my favorite short story involving Poirot is “(TAo) The Christmas Pudding,“ and very few Poirot novels would beat that short story. Does that make sense? 🤔 4d
suvata I think I prefer the long form stories, but she does a really good job with short stories as well. In this collection, my favorites were The Adventure of the Cheap Flat and The Case of the Missing Will. The problem with short stories is that I probably won‘t remember them after a while. Novels seem to stick in my little gray cells much longer. 4d
Sace I‘m just jumping in this month. It‘s been a while since I read one of the Poirot novels so I don‘t think I have a strong preference. As far as these stories go, I‘m glad I‘m not the only one who was a little underwhelmed. Although that might have been partly because I went the audio route and I never quite appreciated the narrator. 4d
kspenmoll I think I prefer her longer stories. These were underwhelming, & seemed to be a vehicle for showcasing Cap. Hastings as rather a dope. Maybe that was her intention? 3d
RainyDayReading I‘m not usually a short stories person but I really enjoyed this! I think almost more than the longer stories at the moment and that‘s simply because of Hastings. I felt like he was much easier for me to stomach in these shorter bites than he‘s been in the previous books. If Hastings wasn‘t a factor I would definitely say the books. 3h

I am proud that I did not bail, but Poirot and Christie are not at their best in short stories. Too much dialogue, too minor of cases, and too quick of resolutions made each story in here a bigger bore than the first. I‘ll read Book 4, but only after a break to cleanse my pallet.

It is the first time that am I reading an English text that is accompanied with the German translation. I did not buy it myself, but got it out of a little free library. So, I kept wondering why the lines end in weird places and rather abruptly till I realized it is supposed to match the German translation. I never noticed before that we need a lot more words to express the same thing in German. 🧐

Confession- I had never read any Agatha Christie until last week 😳🙈. I know, I know. Anyway, I picked up two Christie books at the library, one Poirot and one Marple. However, I didn't realize that Poirot Investigates was a short story collection, and I am not a big fan of short stories, so not the best choice for my first foray into Christie's work. The mysteries were clever and while I didnt love it, I enjoyed it. Next up, a Miss Marple novel.

Bklover My favorite favorite favorite one is The Murder of Roger Ackroyd , although to be honest I haven‘t read many. Maybe ten. But still… that‘s a good one! 2y

3. This collection features several types of crime and intrigue: murder, theft, kidnapping, etc. Which types of crime do you prefer to read about?

@TheAromaofBooks @Librarybelle #agathachristieclubR2

Linsy Hmmm, I'd say any of those, but in a non-bloody, mystery unfolds little-by-little way. And I don't like to know what kind of crime at the start, per se. It's most intriguing when you don't know the stakes at the start. (edited) 5y
BooksAndTea97 I prefer to read about theft crimes. I especially liked Christie's short stories on that theme. But I'm all for mystery in any form. 5y
TheAromaofBooks I think I prefer a good heist in general, but I also like murders if they are more on the cozy side - not a fan of gruesome violence. Christie's style of murder is always my favorite, since she very kindly only knocks off people no one likes anyway! 😆 @Linsy @Booksandtea97 5y

ferskner @Linsy @BooksAndTea97 @TheAromaofBooks I'm a murder girl! (Can I say that?) I definitely agree that non-violent murder is preferred, which makes sense if we're all cozy fans. I can deal with some amount of violence (Tana French, for example), but nothing too graphic. I love mysteriousness rather than grittiness. I do like theft stories of they're short, and Christie always makes them so stylish! 5y
ferskner @Linsy @BooksAndTea97 @TheAromaofBooks follow up question for you guys: do you ever get bothered or weirded out to be interested in murder, even if it's off camera? Sometimes I think about how awful the reality of it would be, and meanwhile I'm entertained by someone's (fictional) death and think if it as a puzzle to solve. I often feel that way about true crime as well. 5y
BooksAndTea97 I don't know what to say. I guess I do feel a bit freaky when I remember how I like murder mysteries and true crime. Other times I wish I was an inspector myself to solve crimes and puzzles, but I wonder if I was and I found out that I have the stomach for it in reality, would that make me slightly less normal. I don't know if Im clear about it. I'm just frightened that I'd like it.. and I don't know, I just feel morbidly curious. 5y
TheAromaofBooks @ferskner @Linsy @BooksAndTea97 - Interesting question. I don't usually get weirded out about it, but I think it may be because I mostly look at it as a puzzle. I'm not interested in the gory details; I'm more interested in figuring out who the killer is/seeing justice done. I do think it would be weird to be an author of murder mysteries - I'm not sure I could spend that much time in a murderer's mind!! But I have DNF'd books that felt like ⬇ 5y
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) they were glorifying the murder, if that makes sense. There was one book in particular where the guy was torturing people and I couldn't deal with it. I don't mind a statement like “this person was horribly tortured before they were killed“ so I know what kind of murderer we're dealing with, but I don't want a three-page description of how it went down. That feels almost like admiring what the murderer is doing somehow. 5y
Librarybelle @Linsy @BooksAndTea97 @TheAromaofBooks @ferskner I read a lot of mysteries, more murder related than any crime. I can‘t say I have a favorite crime-type story, but I know I gravitate more towards murder. My interest in the macabre stories really gives people pause - I‘m so happy I‘ve found fellow readers who don‘t mind discussing darker books! 5y
Linsy @ferskner @booksandtea97 @thearomaofbooks @librarybelle Sometimes I do worry my interest is bad. For example, we met someone new at church and that said he was into the macabre, that he picked up dead bodies for a mortuary for his job, and my husband was like, my wife loves creepy dead stuff! And I go, no I don't (except I do) and then proceed to talk about decomposition and cremation for an hour. And I think, is this weird? I'm still not sure. 🤔 5y
ferskner @TheAromaofBooks TOTALLY. I have to be really careful about what I read/watch for this reason. I have a lot in common with true crime fans but don't like when they see serial killers as heroe-esque (buying paintings they did in jail, etc.). @Linsy @BooksAndTea97 @Librarybelle I think about this topic now that I listen to more true crime, and recognize that something that I'm using for entertainment is someone else's horror. It just gives me pause. 5y

2. Do you enjoy the short story format? Do you enjoy the long form mystery or the short form better?

@TheAromaofBooks @Librarybelle #agathachristieclubR2

Linsy Usually, but I haven't been much in the mood lately. Sometimes I find it hard to keep momentum throughout a collection. 5y
TheAromaofBooks I definitely prefer full novels over short stories. I really struggled with this collection - a lot of the stories felt choppy and it was hard for me to connect with the characters. @Linsy 5y
Laughterhp I didn‘t really like the short story format for these books. I felt like they were a little unbelievable that Poirot could solve them so quickly. 5y

Linsy @Laughterhp Good point. Some were just so complicated in such a short time. 5y
ferskner @Linsy @TheAromaofBooks @Laughterhp agreed on all points. I'm always more interested in the novels because everything is much more developed, but I'm also pretty impressed by how much intricacy Christie can fit in to the short story. I really enjoy the Suchet adaptations of these stories - I think they're best suited as narratives to 60 minute episodes. 5y
TheAromaofBooks @ferskner @Linsy @Laughterhp - I also may have enjoyed these more if I had spaced them out instead of reading them all in a day or two. Despite the different types of plots, they started to feel samey when I was reading them right in a row, so I may have appreciated the subtleties more if I had broken them up with some other books in between. 5y
Laughterhp @TheAromaofBooks I agree. I listened to them on audio all after another. It probably would have been better if I read in print and spaced it out. 5y
Librarybelle @Laughterhp @Linsy @TheAromaofBooks @ferskner I typically like full length novels much more than short stories. I did enjoy this collection, though. Maybe it‘s because I felt like I could read a story, then move on to another task/chore without losing a plot line. But, in general, I feel like short stories are a tad choppy in narrative and underdeveloped. 5y
Linsy @Laughterhp @TheAromaofBooks @ferskner I also listened to this collection, all over a couple days. Maybe if I'd done it like you did @LibraryBelle, I would have enjoyed the format more. But yeah, not as awesomely developed as her full-length books. Can't wait to start our next one! This collection made me excited for a Christie novel again. 5y
ferskner @Librarybelle @Linsy @Laughterhp @TheAromaofBooks the ability to dip in and out is certainly welcome at times! I listened to these and it was nice to have a story basically contained within my commute, more or less. 5y

Discussion questions for these short stories! Per @TheAromaofBooks suggestion, I'm trying out a different format. When you respond, please tag the people who have already commented so we can keep the discussion going!

1. Which story of this collection was your favorite?

@Librarybelle #agathachristieclubR2

Linsy The Adventure of the Cheap Flat! I liked the change of pace the beginning of the story gave. 5y
AnneCecilie My library didn‘t have this collection of stories so I‘ll be back next month 5y
TheAromaofBooks I appreciate you dividing up these questions, @ferskner!! I know it's a little more of a hassle but it has been easier to read answers. 😊 5y

TheAromaofBooks @Linsy - I liked the Cheap Flat story as well - a clever premise. I think my favorite may have been The Mystery of the Hunting Lodge. Although it did seem a bit melodramatic to have “Fate“ kill the murderers off in a plane crash later! 5y
Linsy @TheAromaofBooks Good point. I really enjoyed that one as well! 5y
ferskner @TheAromaofBooks not a problem at all! I am liking this way better already. @Linsy The Mystery of the Hunter's Lodge is one of the best! I think The Tragedy at Marsdon Manor is my favorite because I like spooky things, but to be honest I often conflate these two stories because the TV adaptations remind me each other. The Adventure of the Cheap Flat is also a standout, for sure. 5y
Librarybelle Finally finished my reread, so I can contribute! I liked The Mystery of the Hunting Lodge the best - it seemed more Christie-like. And, totally agree @TheAromaofBooks about the ending of that! I liked this entire collection, but I think Christie did her best with the longer stories, as she could develop the plot and twists a tad better. @Linsy @ferskner 5y
ferskner Yay glad to have to here @Librarybelle! 5y

I‘m definitely in full hibernation mode this week! 🤣

I have been binge watching the Poirot episodes that correspond to the tagged book, and starting to feel like I‘m ready to dive back into my Agatha Christie project (reading them in chronological order), after a long break!

Scochrane26 Where can I find these episodes? 5y
alisiakae @Scochrane26 I have DVD‘s from my library, and the later seasons I can stream on Hoopla 5y
Scochrane26 @4thhouseontheleft I‘ll look at my library. I know they now have acorntv, which is mainly British shows. 5y

Pickpick

This one verges on so-so for me as I don't think it is one of Christie's best, and short stories in general aren't really my style. However I have a huge soft spot for Hastings, and do always find Poirot entertaining. It was just hard to get into the groove when the stories were so brief. Plus, there wasn't really a stand-out chapter for me. Enjoyable but not stellar.

Read this one for #agathachristieclubr2 @ferskner More challenges below ⬇️
