Frank and Sarah Malloy are getting ready to celebrate the New Year 1899 at Trinity Church when they notice their neighbour Mr. Pritchard behaving oddly and annoying the other revellers. Frank tries to convince Pritchard to return home with them, but he refuses. The next morning Sarah and Frank are horrified to learn Pritchard was murdered sometime in the night. To protect the family from scandal, Nelson asks Frank to investigate. Frank and Sarah delve into Pritchard's past and realise there may have been a deadly side to the dawning of the new century.

It‘s been quite some time since i read one of the #gaslightmysteries featuring PI Frank Molloy & his intuitive wife, former midwife, Sarah. An acquaintance of theirs is strangled on New Year‘s Eve,at Trinity Place where many are gathered to ring in the New Year. The usual pandemonium of the Eve-Trinity Churches bells‘ ringing with hymns & “Auld Lang Syne”,horns honking, people shouting-provides cover for the murder. What follows is an investigation🔽

kspenmoll 🔼 rife with intrigue, family secrets,& notorious criminals. The author‘s genius is not just in plot development, but in her descriptions of historically accurate details of the city streets, homes, fashion, transportation, & the lives of both the “ upstairs & downstairs” characters. All this is going on with the backdrop of dairy milk companies, inspired by the dairy wars in NYC city at the time- those who pasteurize & those who do not. 2mo
Suet624 This sounds like a busy book! 2mo
kspenmoll @Suet624 Very very busy. I did not guess the perpetrator. This series is like that. The history major in me loves all the historical background & details. 2mo

22 books into this series & I still enjoy catching up with the Malloys. They've come a long way from the midwife and copper I met in book 1. This is set in 1899, where a recent connection of the couple is found dead after the New Year's celebration. With the police paid to turn a blind eye, it's up to the Malloys to solve the murder & rescue the man's reputation all while working with acquaintances new & old from the seedier side of ol' New York.

What had me excited to read this story was the husband and wife investigative duo of Sarah and Frank but it was mostly Frank doing the investigating while Sarah was focused on other tasks. I felt like she was in the background more often than she should have been. What I loved about this story was the many pieces of historical information that were woven throughout the story, it was a great period piece! Full review at www.thegenreminx.com
