This family story is really incredible, but somehow just not compelling. I really couldn‘t believe such an amazing history came off so flat. Yes, a lot of important issues with identity were raised, but other books have managed it while remaining engaging.

Pickpick

Sarah Valentine grew up with white parents and siblings and consistently told by her parents that she was white. But, as the title of this memoir implies, Sarah‘s biological father, of whom she knew nothing, was African-American. Valentine recounts her experiences in childhood where others around her seemed to intuit the truth that she didn‘t see in herself. A fascinating book that raises questions of upbringing, culture and biology. #netgalley
