I loved this novel translated from the original French. The plot doesn‘t begin to come together until about 40%, but takes off from there like a rocket. Completely bananapants in all the best ways!! 🍌👖

BookBabe Sure is a cool cover! Sounds interesting too 8h

I liked but didn‘t love this memoir that discusses ancestral trauma from the point of view of a middle class white American woman whose ancestors were racists, misogynists, and slaveholders. #Edelweiss #ARC

Well, there‘s A LOT going on here. Humorous and weird and smart and goofy. But, for me, it was all a bit too much and didn‘t quite feel worth the journey to me.

Good narration on #audiobook. Based on the blurb and cover, I expected (WANTED) a full-blown romance. The love story is in here, but it‘s mostly two parallel stories and the coming together is slow and painful.

Absolutely loved this #audiobook narrated by the author that‘s partially a memoir about the death of the author‘s father and her falling in love with her partner. But, it‘s also about meteorites and etymology and losing your keys and so much more. 💕

There have been so many fabulous books about motherhood recently that are truthful about the parts that aren‘t sunshine and roses. This weirdly creepy novel also had a thread of Margaret Wise Brown‘s actual life that was also interesting. Good narration on #audiobook

Reads a bit like a screen play, and it‘s great fun and well paced throughout. But, the climax and aftermath felt a bit clunky. Enjoyed the #audiobook which is read by Steven Weber.

Interesting ideas for changing eating habits in midlife for maximum health. Like most self help books, this one is a take what you like, leave the rest sort of thing. Wasn‘t so crazy about the focus on protein powder.

Love the focus on a female scientist. But, this book (necessarily) gets into the weeds in science and that cuts into the readability for me.

So close, and yet …

Been hitting the #ToB22 shortlist books. I only have two left, but I think I‘m done. Not a Sally Rooney fan and after the rest of the list, I don‘t think I can face another book touted as “experimental fiction”. Most of these were only middle of the road for me. The exceptions (which I really liked) were The Sentence, The Trees, and although it‘s super weird, The Subdivision.

thebluestocking You‘re a machine!! Congratulations! 💙 3w
Ruthiella Well done! I really liked Subdivision too! I like trying to interpret what certain scenarios meant... 3w
BarbaraBB Well done! I must get to The Sentence and Subdivision soon too! 3w
MMFinck I feel the same way about Sally Rooney. It feels like there are so few of us. Is this image supposed to be all the books you read this year? I only see 4 rows. How do I see the rest? Following your reading is so fun! Happy New Year. :)

Holiday Shopping! My eldest niece is a college student. She loves myth retelling and comic books, so Warbringer is a no-brainer (I‘m surprised she hasn‘t read it already). She also took an African-American lit class last semester and loved the books and requested some that were more contemporary. Tayari Jones is a favorite writer of mine and Silver Spartow is my fav of her books so far. I also loved last year‘s Such a Fun Age!

Holiday Shopping! I have two 14 year old nieces with very different reading tastes. This stack is for the one who loves brooding teen angst in her books. The Outsiders is a favorite and so I picked up Jennifer Matthieu‘s retelling with an all girl cast as well as a couple of my favorites that I think fit her preferences.

vivastory I'm echoing the other comment that you have lucky family! I 💙 book shopping for family members. I am curious about that book as Hinton's The Outsiders is a book that made me fall in love with reading 2mo

vivastory I didn't realize they adapted Moxie. I might do a reread of Outsiders & follow-up by reading this one. 2mo

#ToB22

This novel is completely banana pants and I‘m totally here for it. The narrator arrives in the subdivision where the story unravels like a puzzle (glaringly, a jigsaw puzzle serves as a recurring metaphor). The story proceeds down false hallways and reveals both clues and red herrings about what is going on here. Weird and wonderful. #Netgalley #arc #audiobook

Ooof! I really didn‘t like this latest from Rachel Cusk, although I adored Outline. The two primary characters here were both unlikeable and the narrator‘s constant references to “Jeffers”, the unexplained person she is telling this tale to, was off-putting. #ToB22

Litsi She may have gone one book too far on the unidentified character thing. 2mo

Wow. I loved this short novella. It really nails grief and discontent and all of the feels.

Caveat: For those of u who must have a plot, skip this one. It‘s more of a think/feel piece and the end (such as it is) feels more like a short story, and not really a resolution.

#ToB22

This book is amazing. Tookie, a former felon who works in a bookstore In Minnesota owned by a certain author (so meta, right?) is the perfect protagonist in this meditation of trauma, belonging, grief and identity. The story takes place between November 2019 and November 2020 and perfectly captures that moment.
