In the follow-up to the controversial and critically acclaimed mystery The Bishop's Wife, Mormon housewife Linda Wallheim finds herself ruffling feathers in Draper, Utah, as she assists a murder investigation that is being derailed by transphobia within the LDS community. In Draper, Utah, a tight-knit Mormon community is thrown into upheaval when their wards second counselorone of the bishops right-hand menis found dead in an elaborately staged murder on church property. Carl Ashby was known as a devout Mormon, a pillar of the community, and a loving husband and father. Who would want him dead? Linda Wallheim, the wife of the wards bishop, cant rest as long as the ward is suffering. She is particularly worried about Carls grieving family. But the entire case is turned upside down by the autopsy report, which reveals Carl Ashby was a biological female. In the Mormon church, where gender is considered part of a persons soul, some people regard transgenderism as one of the worst possible transgressions of faith. Church officials seem to be more upset by Carls gender than by his murder, and more concerned with hushing up the story than solving the crime. Linda realizes that if the police are to catch the killer, they are going to need an ally on the insideand she is the only one who can help. Carl was living a life of secrecy for twenty years. What else was he hidingand can Linda ferret out the key to his death before the rumors tear her community apart? From the Hardcover edition.

Craziness, as in people out of control. A Mormon elder is murdered at his church and all his secrets come out. Linda, the Bishop‘s wife and Curt, the Bishop, find his body. In the process of the duties to the church they become involved in finding the murderer. Lots of action and creepiness, but also a few moments of humor.

So what does one do after buying dozens of books at a book sale? Go to the library and start reading a new book of course! 😄

Alicia Post your VNSA haul when you can! So curious to see what you got! 😁 8y
saguarosally @Alicia Um that's a lot of work. Due to space constraints I'll have to capture them outside on the patio. 😱 8y
Alicia @saguarosally sounds like you got a lot!!! I guess you don't have to photograph them all! 😥😂 8y
saguarosally @Alicia It's also dark outside. I could try to get up early....perhaps.... 8y

Took a long time to finish this particular hate-read, I'm afraid. I really liked her first book but this... Well the road to hell is paved with good intentions. The LGBTQ characters are not well-considered and the tone is didactic and cringey. I can't recommend this to anyone. Two thumbs down.

javadiva Good to know because I liked her first book too! 8y

A pedicure before Congress and, actually, a wee bit of a hate read. I really enjoyed her first book, but the reviews of this one have been bad for a reason. It deals with transgender issues, and Harrison is not the most nuanced writer. Problematic doesn't begin...

skrishna Marcy and I hate read this one together. 9y
