And the Land Lay Still
And the Land Lay Still | James Robertson
1 post | 1 read | 1 to read
'Toweringly ambitious, virtually flawlessly realized, a masterpiece and, without doubt, my book of the year' John Harding, Daily Mail And the Land Lay Still is nothing less than the story of a nation. James Robertson's breathtaking novel is a portrait of modern Scotland as seen through the eyes of natives and immigrants, journalists and politicians, drop-outs and spooks, all trying to make their way through a country in the throes of great and rapid change. It is a moving, sweeping story of family, friendship, struggle and hope - epic in every sense. 'Powerful and moving. A brilliant and multifaceted saga of Scottish life in the second half of the twentieth century' Sunday Times 'Bold, discursive and deep, Robertson's sweeping history of life and politics in twentieth-century Scotland should not be ignored' Ian Rankin, Observer, Books of the Year 'Gripping, vivid, beautifully realized' The Times 'Brilliant and thoughtful. Eminently readable, subtle and profound' Independent on Sunday 'Engrossing' Daily Telegraph

Pickpick

This is my book of the year as I finish my lunch overwhelmed by the final pages.Taking in 60 yrs of Scottish history from 1950 to 2010, the book tracks a series of characters who all interconnect. Dealing with political changes it has at its centre a man back from the war in Japan who leaves his family to live on the road. His image is captured by a photographer, in 2010 the son stages an exhibition of his father's work. Tender + tough at times 5*

Jaykristoff Your note stopped me cold-what a journey. Sixty years, one image, generations stitched through memory and movement. Tender and tough is exactly it. Adding this to the top of my reading list. Thanks for the nudge. 13h
