I‘m now 3 for 3 in books that didn‘t live up to my high hopes. I‘m giving it a pick because I learned exactly what went on in Flint that probably caused the lead crisis, but the narrative was all over the place and the tone was off. She tries to strike a conversational, storytelling tone but I found it a little too informal in places, and she comes across a little bit manic, impulsively shooting off e-mails and such

This was such a delightful cozy mystery & really just matched my mood perfectly! (It's set in summer near Vancouver but the warm sunny weather with cool breezes are what we've got going on here currently & really set the tone)
Intriguing murder to solve, fun well-written characters to meet, & a lovely new small town to fall for! I appreciated that the MC & police chief are queer so I'm looking forward to a slow burn romance in the series to follow

For the past eight years, Brynn Donovan's father has been in prison convicted of killing her mother. Brynn & brother Max initially lived with their aunt but recently Brynn has been living her own life as a tattoo artist. On the way home from work one evening, Brynn's estranged father kidnaps her & says that what he said back then was true: there is something under the earth that is coming to get them & once he has secured Max too (continued)

OutsmartYourShelf they are heading for a shelter he has built to keep them both safe. Brynn looks for an opportunity to escape but events start to make her wonder if the threat may be real after all.

Liked: the storyline was good & completely different to what I initially expected. This is one of those books that it is best to go into knowing as little as possible apart from the setup. Dislikes: the main character Brynn - being a smartass a-hole is not the same as
18h
OutsmartYourShelf being a strong character. The pacing was also way too full-on all the time with barely time to catch your breath. Overall, whilst it was a good story, the main character affected my enjoyment of it. I rate this one 3.5🌟

My thanks to #NetGalley & publishers, Thrillerscape Press, for the opportunity to read an ARC.

I was so pleasantly surprised by how much I loved this book! I read it for a book club but I might explore more of this author's work now. It follows the stories of three women from different time periods (1908, 1934, & 1998) who have encounters with evil witches. The world building was great, I loved the interconnection and overarching themes of the three stories. The audiobook was very well done, the narrator made each time period feel distinct.

Kenyazero I‘ve heard of this one, looks like it‘s a good read! 2d
KT1432 I‘m really excited about this. I loved Mexican Gothic (it‘s not for everyone though), and I‘m currently reading a vampire story by her that went out of print for a while, Certain Dark Things, and I‘m really enjoying it too. I think she may be a pretty consistent author for me. 🙂 1d

This was a hard book to read, but also one I‘ve been anticipating for a long time. It‘s astonishing how much this dystopian novel felt like now. I‘m not sure what to think about the ending.

Melismatic Apparently a third book was in Butler‘s plan…but she was never able to complete it. 🥺 2d

I‘ve read quite a few seasonal picture books earlier this month but I loved this one using Dracula to teach about the importance of blood donation! Also behold the power of chocolate! #HauntedShelf #GrimReaders #OneSnacktoRuleThemAll #Chocolatiers #LitsyBloodDrive #BookSpinBingo

This was a fun follow up to The Spellshop. We get to learn Terlu's story when her statue is sent to a remote island & brought back to life. She wants to befriend the taciturn gardener & try to save his enchanted greenhouse, but is terrified of using magic again & being punished.
I loved all the talking plants & their unique personalities. I liked the little family they created on their island, as Terlu & Yarrow both work through abandonment issues

I had high hopes for this one, but the ending left me cold. It was extremely well-written and I enjoyed both Zelu‘s and Ankara‘s storylines. Most of the book told a rich, evocative story brimming with symbolism, techno-optimism and philosophical commentary on what it means to be human and the purpose of stories in human and post-human culture. The last two chapters took that and turned it into a goofy joke.

CSeydel The breathtaking scientific illiteracy of the gene therapy gimmick enraged me, too. 3d

Very dated, and an improbable number of antique stores for one area. Not even a secret passage or a submarine, but still looking forward to the discussion tomorrow.

RaeLovesToRead I think "an improbably number of antique stores" is now my new favourite piece of literary criticism ? 3d
RaeLovesToRead *improbable 3d
Ruthiella Remember, River Heights is magical. It has beaches, an airport, two synthetic fabric factories, a castle, at least two retired sea dogs, a variety of colonial era inns…and a multitude of antique shops. 3d
