Tell Me Why
Tell Me Why: The Story of My Life and My Music | Archie Roach
5 posts | 3 read | 1 reading | 5 to read
A powerful memoir of a true Australian legend: stolen child, musical and lyrical genius, and leader. Not many have lived as many lives as Archie Roach stolen child, seeker, teenage alcoholic, lover, father, musical and lyrical genius, and leader but it took him almost a lifetime to find out who he really was. Roach was only two years old when he was forcibly removed from his family. Brought up by a series of foster parents until his early teens, his world imploded when he received a letter that spoke of a life he had no memory of. In this intimate, moving and often shocking memoir, Archies story is an extraordinary odyssey through love and heartbreak, family and community, survival and renewal and the healing power of music. Overcoming enormous odds to find his story and his people, Archie voices the joy, pain and hope he found on his path through song to become the legendary singer-songwriter and storyteller that he is today beloved by fans worldwide. Tell Me Why is a stunning account of resilience and the strength of spirit and of a great love story.

This is a wonderful audiobook. Listening to Archie tell his stories, interspersed with song, is heartbreaking, heartwarming and inspiring. The Stolen Generation is a traumatic part of our Australian history. The resultant alcohol abuse and addiction issues are shocking but also understandable. I hope today‘s children have more awareness and appreciation of indigenous culture, history and achievement than my generation.

Just fabulous, like his music. Archie Roach tells his life story with such candour, he makes no excuses when he has so many rights too. Each chapter begins with one of his songs. Those who do not understand how impacting systemic racism is to all elements of life (and even those ho do) need to read this. Just like his songs though his beautiful, humble and noble voice comes through.

A friend recently told me she described Archie Roach to someone who didn‘t know who he was as the Australian Aboriginal Elvis. He has spent his musical career writing and singing songs of the loss & dispossession of his people. I dare you to look up his most famous song, Took the Children Away, & not be moved to tears. I feel so fortunate to have seen him perform live numerous times. This memoir is an engrossing account of his remarkable life.

Butterfinger Wow! I'd never heard of him. Interested. 5y

My first read for 2020. So looking forward to this, whilst steeling myself for the trauma and devastation 😭😢.

I have had the pleasure and privilege of seeing Archie perform many times and went to see him launch this book last month 🖤💛❤️.
