Gregory Scofield‘s memoir, written when he was only 33, outlines his struggles with intergenerational trauma and with the internalized self-loathing he‘s experienced as a gay Métis man. I wasn‘t prepared for how hard it hit me; for the sheer depth of feeling, or for Scofield‘s ability to make the specific feel universal. I highly recommend it in its own right and as a successor/cognate text to Maria Campbell‘s HALF-BREED.

I made a big pot of turkey chili this afternoon, partly because I‘ve gotta eat and partly because I wanted to do something productive while I finished THUNDER THROUGH MY VEINS. What an amazing book. I‘ve enjoyed a couple of Scofield‘s poetry collections, but they in no way prepared me for this hard-hitting memoir. #audiocooking
