Once a Girl, Always a Boy
Once a Girl, Always a Boy: A Family Memoir of a Transgender Journey | Jo Ivester
4 posts | 3 read | 5 to read
Jeremy Ivester is a transgender man. Thirty years ago, his parents welcomed him into the world as what they thought was their daughter. As a child, he preferred the toys and games our society views as masculine. He kept his hair short and wore boys clothing. They called him a tomboy. Thats what he called himself. By high school, when he showed no interest in flirting, his parents thought he might be lesbian. At twenty, he wondered if he was asexual. At twenty-three, he surgically removed his breasts. A year later, he began taking the hormones that would lower his voice and give him a beardand he announced his new name and pronouns. Once a Girl, Always a Boy is Jeremys journey from childhood through coming out as transgender and eventually emerging as an advocate for the transgender community. This is not only Jeremys story but also that of his family, told from multiple perspectivesthose of the siblings who struggled to understand the brother they once saw as a sister, and of the parents who ultimately joined him in the battle against discrimination. This is a story of acceptance in a world not quite ready to accept.

Jo writes about her son's transition journey with a clear willingness to learn and love for her child. Toward the end she reflects on how at first she thought her kid was just experiencing strong tomboy feelings like she herself did as a kid, and she reflects on the differences between her experiences and Jeremy's. It was fun listening to the audiobook because each family member reads chapters from their point of view. #LGBTQ #Nonfiction

Clare-Dragonfly That sounds lovely, particularly the differences between the mother‘s experience and the son‘s! 2y

I worked a bit on my current crochet project while listening to this book today. It's my first character other than a practice one I made to help me learn some of the stitches for this one. #LitsyCrafters

A slight pick and a big shoutout for Jeremy and all he did 🙌

In this book we learn about how young Emily became Jeremy, his thoughts and what he's been through. Jeremy's family gets to tell their side of the story as well and like this mum Jo Ivester wrote an important book for all people, no matter if they're trans themselves, family or friends, teachers, students...

The worlds needs to hear, to see, to feel and to understand!

Good read. Enjoyed the first hand story telling of such a difficult subject.
