Ultima | Stephen Baxter
2 posts | 3 read | 1 reading | 2 to read
Hailed as “one of the most inventive writers that science fiction has ever produced" (SF Site), Stephen Baxter builds on the massive success of Proxima with a career-defining novel of big ideas.... On the planet of Per Ardua, alien artifacts were discovered—hatches that allowed humans to step across light-years of space as if they were stepping into another room. But this newfound freedom has consequences.... As humanity discovers the real nature of the universe, a terrifying truth comes to light. We all have countless pasts converging in this present—and our future is terrifyingly finite. There are minds in the universe that are billions of years old and now we are vulnerable to their plans for us.... It’s time to fight back and take control.

The primary mystery laid out in Proxima was solved in Ultima but it took a lot of effort to unveil who was behind the curtain. Much of the novel was set on a couple of alternate history Earths, with some trips to Proxima B thrown in.

After a really long and exhausting 500 pages, the book really peaks at the end. I thought it wrapped up very satisfyingly - a little glimmer of hope thrown in to a big pot of melancholia. Just the way I like it.

swynn Reminds me I need to get back to this. Except I read Proxima so long ago I'd probably have to reread it first. Good to hear it's satisfying! 4y
BestDogDad @swynn Yeah, there was a lot of ground covered in Proxima. There is some review in Ultima, though, I‘m guessing Baxter thought there would be some readers that might need some background. 4y

If you‘re ever in Minneapolis and love science fiction you need to hit Uncle Hugo‘s. It has the most complete selection of new sci-fi books anywhere and an insane number of used books. I always walk out with a few books.

catsuit_mango I had a friend drop me there when I was visiting her and after the set amount of time I was still lost in there ;) amazing shop 6y
BestDogDad @catsuit_mango Neat! Yes, it is like a treasure hunt in there. 6y
