Apocalypse Never
Apocalypse Never: Why Environmental Alarmism Hurts Us All | Michael Shellenberger
4 posts | 2 read | 3 to read
Climate change is real but its not the end of the world. It is not even our most serious environmental problem. Michael Shellenberger has been fighting for a greener planet for decades. He helped save the worlds last unprotected redwoods. He co-created the predecessor to todays Green New Deal. And he led a successful effort by climate scientists and activists to keep nuclear plants operating, preventing a spike of emissions. But in 2019, as some claimed billions of people are going to die, contributing to rising anxiety, including among adolescents, Shellenberger decided that, as a lifelong environmental activist, leading energy expert, and father of a teenage daughter, he needed to speak out to separate science from fiction. Despite decades of news media attention, many remain ignorant of basic facts. Carbon emissions peaked and have been declining in most developed nations for over a decade. Deaths from extreme weather, even in poor nations, declined 80 percent over the last four decades. And the risk of Earth warming to very high temperatures is increasingly unlikely thanks to slowing population growth and abundant natural gas. Curiously, the people who are the most alarmist about the problems also tend to oppose the obvious solutions. Whats really behind the rise of apocalyptic environmentalism? There are powerful financial interests. There are desires for status and power. But most of all there is a desire among supposedly secular people for transcendence. This spiritual impulse can be natural and healthy. But in preaching fear without love, and guilt without redemption, the new religion is failing to satisfy our deepest psychological and existential needs.

Shellenberger has been an environmental activist for most of his life. I knew of him through his nuclear power advocacy. In this book he sifts through the hysteria being fed to us in seemingly undigestable chunks through the media and breaks down what is true and what are exaggerations. He explains how we got to where we are and how we need to proceed going forward, in a clear and rational manner.

I was struggling with this, because I disagree with the author's view that climate change isn't that dire, but when he said the Brazilian rain forests weren't that important to the oxygen levels of the Earth, I was like Nope! No way! I'm out of here!! Shellenberger lays out his credentials as an environmental activist, but he comes off as someone who's sold out. Economics, free markets and higher wages in third world countries ⬇️⬇️⬇️

RamsFan1963 isn't going to save the planet. I don't consider myself an alarmist, but I do think I'm pretty well read on the subject. He sneers at people who are worried about the survival of human civilization, we're all alarmist and "extreme" activist who don't understand the science like he does. Two big green thumbs down. ?????? 4y
Crazeedi I just heard about this book and heard the author tall , and I actually agree with a lot of what he says. He was a climate activist for a long time. 4y
