I read this one at the same time as 1,000 steps and right after I Feed Her to the Beast, which is honestly a really good transition. In IFH2tB we follow a black girl in Europe who faces discrimination. This book talks more about that experience through the years and in different parts of Europe. Most of the 📚 I've read focus on the US pov so this was very informational. The author is clear and very thorough! 5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐!! #netgalleybacklog

This is a really broad look at the presence of Africans in Europe. The topics the author selected are interesting and the people she chose to highlight felt a little random. If you like reading history books with broad topics definitely give this a go. I'm almost more intrigued by the things and people she chose to leave out. I love the image that was chosen for this cover.

The answer to every person who's ever tried to argue that Black people appearing in period dramas in anachronistic. It's not. I learned about a number of historical figures I'd either never heard of (Joseph Bologne, French composer almost erased from history by Napoleon) or didn't realize were of African descent (Alexander Pushkin). Probably too dry for reluctant non-fiction readers but I'm very glad to have read it and learned quite a bit.
