Transitions: A Mother's Journey
Transitions: A Mother's Journey | Élodie Durand
5 posts | 3 read | 5 to read
When Anne learns that her 19-year-old is a transgender man, she struggles to understand her son's new identity. A new landmark in nonfiction comics, Transitions is a sympathetic, informative, and moving story of a family's journey to acceptance. "I thought I was open-minded... The news of my child's gender change hit me like a tidal wave, sweeping away all my certainties. Sweeping away the comfort of my tidy little life." When university biologist Anne Marbot learns that the 19-year-old she raised as "Lucie" is a transgender man named Alex, she's overwhelmed by questions. How can this be? Who put these ideas in your head? What if you regret it? Am I overreacting? How will your grandparents react? Why didn't I see it coming? Why is this so easy for others? Am I a bigot? What does gender really mean, anyway? How can I be the parent my child needs? It soon becomes clear that Alex is not the only one embarking on a journey of self-discovery. The road is not easy, and sometimes their relationship is bitterly strained. But Alex is sure of himself, and Anne is determined to be strong for his sake. With time, she too will be transformed, rediscovering her identity as a mother in profound new ways. With grace and sensitivity, award-winning graphic novelist Élodie Durand (Parenthesis) captures the unique journey of well-meaning loved ones who struggle to reconcile new gender identities with their old assumptions. Deeply researched and drawn from true experience, Transitions is a must-read companion for allies and families navigating trans issues and a compassionate roadmap to acceptance.

I thought this was insightful into an experience that I don‘t often relate to or have grace for, the parent (in this case a mother) of a trans child struggling with their child‘s transition. I just don‘t often have the bandwidth for it. My partner is trans and I‘ve gone through enough nonsense in my own life. To be honest, Anne, the mother here, was extremely frustrating to me. However… ⬇ï¸

psalva …what Durand portrays so well are those moments of realizations and painful, slow growth. By the end, I was rather impressed by the MC when she says of her old journals, “I have trouble relating to who I used to be.†I also really liked the interspersed segments showing the research that the MC was doing about gender, sex, and sexuality. If you can have grace for the struggle portrayed, I think this is a worthwhile read! (edited) 4mo
psalva And thank you @Lindy! I saw this in a recent BookTube video of yours. I‘m glad I gave it a shot. 4mo
Lindy The mother changed a lot, thankfully. It seemed like an honest portrayal, with much resistance at the beginning. 4mo

Élodie doesn't shy away from showing her struggles to be a supportive parent when her late teens early20s child comes out as trans. Opening the book with information about gender, identity, and sexuality does a lot to show how far she has come since then. This is a meaningful read, and I highly recommend it for anyone who is having cognitive dissonance in supporting trans folks in their own lives. #LGBTQ #Transgender #Comic #NonfictionComic

Breaking out of assigned gender norms and just being yourself is extremely freeingâ¤ï¸ even for cis folks. As a teen and early 20s young woman, I hated the idea of doing girl things simply because I was female, and sometimes went out of my way to not do them. Eventually I stopped gendering things I was doing and just let myself do what I wanted to, and stopped avoiding experiences I wanted to have.

Two thirds of the way through this graphic memoir, and the mother (PoV character) is still misgendering and deadnaming her son. Ugh.
